Lignano's sea is calm over a shallow bottom, so you can wade back to the place where you noticed and mark it.
A band that slipped off while you were wading at Lignano Sabbiadoro, Lido di Jesolo, Grado or on the Lido went into shallow water, and shallow water can be searched. What shapes the search is the depth you were standing in and the part of the shore you were level with. All four beaches run on for kilometres, so a seafront street or a pier narrows it far more than the name of the resort.

Straight up the beach from where it went
If it went while you were standing in the sea, walk straight up the beach from that spot and drop a pin where the sand meets the promenade or the first buildings. Note the nearest street, piazza or pier, and anything with a name on it that you passed on the way down. Then think back to when you last had it for certain, and whether you swam again after that.
The Lido, Sabbiadoro and Costa Azzurra in Grado all have free beach as well as equipped stretches. Say which you were on, and what stood behind you.

Four resorts on the northern Adriatic shore
The Lido lies between the Venice lagoon and the sea. Lignano and Grado look onto lagoons of their own, and Jesolo sits where the Sile and the Piave reach the coast.
The Gran Viale and the beach, Venice Lido
The vaporetto comes in at Santa Maria Elisabetta, and the Gran Viale Santa Maria Elisabetta leads from the piazzale across the island to the sea. Near its sea end, a free beach runs along Lungomare D'Annunzio beside the equipped beach, and the seabed off the Lido is never very deep.
The Murazzi, San Nicolò and Alberoni, Venice Lido
Along the eastern side of the Lido stand the Murazzi, massive sea walls of Istrian stone, with a free beach running beside them. People come here to sunbathe in peace. At the northern tip, near the San Nicolò lighthouse, the free beach of San Nicoletto is the island's last stretch, reached by bus or bike. At the southern end, past Malamocco, Alberoni has a free beach among its sandy dunes.
The piers, the piazzas and the Faro, Lido di Jesolo
Jesolo's beach is a long shore of very fine sand, with piers running out into the sea. Piazzas in the resort such as Piazza Mazzini, Piazza Aurora and Piazza Brescia give you a way to fix your place on the shore. At the Faro, the beach meets the bank of the Sile where the river runs into the sea. At the eastern end, the fishing village of Cortellazzo has a public beach at the mouth of the Piave, with wooden boardwalks through the dunes and a wild pinewood.
Sabbiadoro, Lignano
Lignano's beach of very fine golden sand links Sabbiadoro with Riviera, passing Lignano Pineta on the way. Sabbiadoro is the lively part, full of shops and nightlife, and parts of its shore are free beach. Lungomare Trieste along the seafront is a handy reference for your pin.
Pineta and Riviera, Lignano
Lignano Pineta is the quiet part of town, set in green, and Lignano Riviera lies among maritime pines between the beach and the mouth of the Tagliamento. Both share the one beach with Sabbiadoro, so the street or path you used to reach the sand is the detail we need most.
Costa Azzurra, the diga and the harbour, Grado
Costa Azzurra, which people in Grado call the old beach, is the westernmost beach on the island. Entry is free, with some areas under concession, and the bottom drops more quickly here than elsewhere on Grado's shore. From Costa Azzurra the diga, as locals call it, runs east as a seafront walk along Lungomare Nazario Sauro. In the centre, the Y-shaped harbour is where the town gathers.
Grado Pineta, the Valle Cavanata and the Isonzo mouth
Grado Pineta lies east of the main beach, backed by a wide belt of trees, and is joined to the centre by a cycle path. A very long sandbank shelters the water, and kitesurfers come from all over Europe. Further east, the seaside cycle route crosses the Valle Cavanata, and at the Isonzo mouth the Isola della Cona has a visitor centre, walking trails and bird hides.

A shallow sea
On the Lido the seabed is never very deep, and at Lignano and Grado the bottom is shallow as well.
Stone under foot
Around the Jesolo piers there are rocks under the surface. Tell us whether you were on stone or on sand. If it slipped off your hand from a pedalo well out to sea, that is a long shot, and you would hear that from us first.
Questions about Venice Lido, Jesolo, Lignano and Grado
My husband only noticed his wedding band had gone when we were well out in the shallows at Lignano Sabbiadoro.
Because the sea at Lignano is calm over a shallow bottom, the spot where he noticed may still be water you can stand in. Walk straight up the beach from there, drop a pin at the top of the sand, and tell us whether the sea reached his knees, his waist or his chest. Add the last moment he can picture the band on his hand.
The Oura ring was on when we reached a pier at Lido di Jesolo, and gone after a paddle beside it.
The piers along the Jesolo beach are good markers. The water around them is shallow, with rocks hidden under the surface in places. Tell us which pier it was, by the nearest piazza or street, which side of it you were on, and whether your feet were on rock or on sand.
I had both earrings on the vaporetto to the Lido, and only one by the time we reached the sea.
Then the street is part of the search area, not only the sand. From Piazzale Santa Maria Elisabetta the Gran Viale crosses the island to the sea, and the free beach on Lungomare D'Annunzio lies near its far end. I sunbathed on the Murazzi all afternoon and came back without my chain.
People come to the Murazzi, the great sea walls of Istrian stone, to sunbathe in peace, and a free beach runs beside them. Pin the spot, say whether you spent the afternoon on the walls or on the beach, and add a picture of the stones around you.
Swimming off Costa Azzurra in Grado, I felt the bracelet slide over my hand.
Costa Azzurra is the westernmost beach on the island, and the bottom drops away there faster than elsewhere on Grado, so people swim without going far from the shore. Use the promenade behind the sand to show us your starting point, say how far you swam before you missed it, and whether the clasp had given trouble before.
My phone went missing after an evening on the sand at Grado Pineta.
Grado Pineta is joined to the centre by a cycle path, and kiosks run parts of the beach, so plenty of people stay on into the evening. Give us the nearest street or beach entrance, say whether you sat close to the water or higher up the beach, and describe the case, since its colour is what catches the eye first.
Our apartment was in Lignano Riviera rather than Sabbiadoro. Where do we start?
With the part of town. Lignano is one town in three parts, Sabbiadoro, Pineta and Riviera, and a single beach runs past all of them. Give us the nearest street, or the one you walked down to reach the beach, and say whether the watch, ring or other piece went on the beach or in the sea.
Our daughter's necklace is somewhere around the Faro in Jesolo, by the mouth of the Sile.
The Faro area runs along the bank of the Sile where the river meets the sea. Say whether you were on the beach facing the sea or along the riverbank, and pin the place. If you only noticed on the drive home, a rough pin and whatever pictures you took there are still worth sending.
