Record the spot before you leave for the airport
Stand where you think it fell, drop a pin in your maps app and screenshot it. Take one photo of the ground and a wider one with a net post or a picnic shelter in the frame. Write down the time. Then leave a phone number and an email address with whoever looks after the place: Clark County Parks and Recreation for Sunset Park, the Nature Center at Wetlands Park, the Visitor Center at Valley of Fire. For anything lost indoors, the hotel's own lost and found and its security desk are the first call.

Sunset Park and its seven sand courts
Sunset Park is the largest park Clark County runs, 324 acres (about 131 hectares), in the southeastern valley near the airport. It has 7 sand volleyball courts, 9 softball fields, 3.5 miles (5.6 km) of pathway and a fishing pond of about 14 acres (5.7 hectares), and the Sunset Park Dunes are the last dune field left on that part of the valley floor. A ring or a watch taken off for a game could end up in the sand. Tell us which court, which side of the net and how far you were from the post.
Clark County Wetlands Park and its 14-mile loop
Wetlands Park spans 2,900 acres (about 1,170 hectares) on the eastern edge of the Las Vegas Valley, with five trailheads and a 210-acre Nature Preserve. The preserve has three miles (4.8 km) of paved trail plus unpaved paths, and the Wetlands Loop Trail runs 14 miles (about 22 km). For a phone or a key fob lost on a walk or a ride here, we ask first which trailhead you started from and where you stopped.
Picnicking beside the ponds at Floyd Lamb Park
Floyd Lamb Park at Tule Springs is a 680-acre (275-hectare) Las Vegas city park with reservable picnic areas, a volleyball court and walking and jogging paths. There are four ponds, and the upper one covers about 5 acres (2 hectares), on Nevada Department of Wildlife figures. For a bracelet or a watch that went missing over lunch, name the picnic area and the pond you were nearest.
The UNLV campus is one large arboretum
The arboretum takes in the whole 335-acre (136-hectare) campus. About 80 acres (32 hectares) are landscaped with trees, shrubs and turf, and a two-acre Xeric Garden sits at the entrance to the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art. For an earring or a necklace that went missing during photographs on a lawn, tell us the nearest building and which way you walked to the car.
Henderson's lake park and the Boulder City parks
Cornerstone Park, on Wigwam Parkway in Henderson, has a 31-acre (12.5-hectare) lake, volleyball courts, an open grass area and exercise stairs. We take enquiries for Lake Las Vegas too. In Boulder City, bighorn sheep come down from the mountains to graze at Hemenway Valley Park, about 10 acres (4 hectares) on Ville Drive. For an earring lost there, tell us where you stood to watch them. Veterans Memorial Park has 2 beach volleyball courts and a 3-acre (1.2-hectare) fishing pond.
Boulder Beach on Lake Mead and the Red Rock Canyon drive
Boulder Beach, in Lake Mead National Recreation Area a short drive from Boulder City, runs for more than a mile along the Boulder Basin shore, with tent campsites nearby and separate beaches for canoes, kayaks and jet skis a mile or two along. West of the city, Red Rock Canyon's Scenic Drive is 13 miles (21 km) of one-way road with a dozen trailheads and parking areas, so give us the pullout.
Day trips to Valley of Fire and Lee Canyon
Valley of Fire State Park covers 40,000 acres (about 16,200 hectares) of red sandstone. Its shaded picnic areas include Seven Sisters, the Cabins and White Domes, so use those names. In winter, Lee Canyon in the Mount Charleston area has designated snow play areas, the Foxtail Snow Play Area among them, and a ring could come off with a glove in the snow.

Days of 100 F and more
On average about 78 days a year reach 100 F (38 C), the National Weather Service's records show. There is no need to go back out in that heat to look again. Record the spot once and write to us from the shade.
Turf, court sand, unpaved trail and snow
UNLV has 80 acres of landscaped ground, Sunset Park has sand courts, the final 2.5 miles (4 km) of the Wetlands Loop on its south side are unpaved, and Lee Canyon has snow in winter. Tell us which surface you were on.
Fishing ponds with a bank you can walk
Sunset Park Pond is up to 12 feet (3.7 metres) deep, and the upper pond at Floyd Lamb Park reaches about 15 feet (4.6 metres). Nearly all of the shoreline at both is accessible. If something went in from the bank, what matters is where you stood and how far out it landed.
Worked examples for a short trip
One of my diamond studs is somewhere in a sand volleyball court at Sunset Park and we fly out on Thursday. What is worth doing before then?
Mark the court. Sunset Park has 7 sand courts, so note which one, which side of the net and how far from the post you were. Photograph the sand, save a pin and keep the matching stud to show us. The rest can wait until you are home.
I took my watch off at a picnic at Floyd Lamb Park and it never made it back to the car. Is a lost watch on that much grass findable?
It can be, if you can name the picnic area. The park covers 680 acres (275 hectares), but a picnic uses one small part of it. Tell us which pond you sat beside and where the car was. Ask the city's parks department whether anything was handed in.
We are back home in Ohio. My daughter's earring fell out on a lawn at UNLV during her graduation photos. Too late?
No. A lost diamond earring on turf is a small target, so find the last photo where she is wearing both, and mark on a map screenshot where she stood after that. Send a photo of the other earring too.
We have one free morning before the flight. Would a metal detector rental Las Vegas shop help us find a wedding band on the grass at Cornerstone Park?
It might. Renting one yourself can suit a fresh loss on a lawn or dry sand when you know the spot to within a few steps. A detectorist makes more sense for water, a large area or a small item such as an earring.
My iPhone came out of my pocket while we were cycling the Wetlands Loop Trail, and the battery will be flat by now. Is there anything useful left?
Yes, open Find My on another device first. Apple says a device whose battery has run out still shows its last known location for up to seven days. Screenshot that map, and tell us which trailhead you started from and where you turned round.
My son's chain came off while sledding in Lee Canyon and there was no signal to drop a pin. What can I send you instead?
Photos. Cell service is limited in the mountains, but your camera still works. If you are still up there, take one picture up the run and one down it, with a tree or a sign in the frame. Send them once you are back in the valley.
My Oura ring slipped off on the grass by the fishing pond at Veterans Memorial Park. Do you take on Boulder City, or only Las Vegas?
Boulder City too, just as we do Las Vegas and Henderson. The park has a 3-acre (1.2-hectare) fishing pond and plenty of open green space, so tell us which side of the pond you were on and what you were sitting near.
