Shëngjin and Velipojë
Plenty of room on the sand, and that is the problem
Velipojë beach and the mouth of the Buna, Shëngjin and its port, Rana e Hedhun, and the new road over Mali i Rencit between them.
Velipojë is written up for the space on it, and Shëngjin for what has been built along it. Neither of those helps you the moment a ring has gone and one patch of sand has to be picked out from all the rest.

Working out where you were on a beach this wide
Where you were across the beach counts for as much here as where you were along it. Say whether you had settled nearer the waterline or nearer the back of the sand, and what you walked past coming in from the road. The beach name on its own leaves two people a long way apart.
Then send what you were doing when you last knew you had it, whether the sea came into it at all, and a map pin. Where you are guessing rather than remembering, write that next to it. If it went in the last hour, write from where you are rather than from the car.

Shëngjin beach and the port
Shëngjin beach lies west of the city of Lezhë along the shores of the Adriatic, and what has grown up on it is a mixture of modern resorts, restaurants serving traditional cooking, and the port that keeps the town alive. Hotels and bars line the front, water activities run off it, and fishing is well developed in this area. If the evening moved from a table to the sand, say where you crossed.
Velipojë beach
Velipojë stands where the river Buna meets the Adriatic, southwest of the city of Shkodër. Its sand is fine and dark in colour, and many visitors use it for sun baths. The sea is shallow and the depth increases gradually, and there is room enough on the beach for people to spread well out from each other.
Rana e Hedhun
Rana e Hedhun lies near Shëngjin, a clean beach formed out of sand dunes, with the biggest of them set on the hillside so that the sand looks as though it is pouring off the mountain into the sea. People come to swim, to explore the dunes, to walk, to camp and to photograph the place. Start by telling us which of the two you were on, the slope or the flat sand by the water.
Kune and Vain, by the lagoons
Southwest of Shëngjin, towards the mouth of the Drin, the Kune and Vain lagoons sit among woods, marshes, small islands and wild beaches. Kune beach, on the Shëngjin coast, is wide sand under tall pines, with a small island cut off from the shore by a stream that looks like a river. Vain beach is long, quiet sand where people walk and wait for the sunset. Say which beach, and which side of the stream.
The new road and the panoramic balcony
The new road between Shëngjin and Velipojë runs over Mali i Rencit, above Rana e Hedhun, and a panoramic balcony has been built on it with a car park attached, so people pull in. The view opens out along the coast as far as Ulcinj. We will want to know where the car stood and how far from it you went.
The mouth of the Buna
The Buna rises out of Lake Shkodër and runs down into the Adriatic, and it is the only river in Albania that forms a proper natural delta. Velipojë sits on the left-hand side of the river mouth, and Franc Josef island lies out in the delta, a quiet place of untouched nature. River water, sea water and sand meeting in one place make a different job from open beach, so separate the three in your message: the river, the sea, or the bank.

A detectorist is found for the ground your loss is on, and the map, the photographs and the description you sent go out with them. Nothing is reconstructed from memory at that end.
One thread, however long it takes
You can send this in pieces over a few days and each piece joins the ones before it. Nothing has to arrive in the right order.
Say what the item had been doing lately
Tell us if the clasp had been catching, if the band had gone loose across that week, or if there was sun cream on your hands. Things like that shape where a search begins and they are usually the last thing anyone thinks to write.
Money is settled before anybody goes out

Sand you lie in as much as on
The sand at Velipojë is fine and dark in colour, and many visitors use it for sun baths rather than a towel. Say whether that was you, and whether your things were on the sand, in a bag, or under the surface.
Shallow, and deepening slowly
The sea at Velipojë is shallow and the depth increases gradually. That is in your favour, so long as you can put yourself somewhere along that slope.
A slope instead of flat sand
At Rana e Hedhun the dunes climb the hillside and the sand runs down towards the water. Tell us whether you were up on the dunes or down on the flat shore, and which direction you had walked in from.
Fresh water at one end, a harbour at the other
Velipojë sits at the mouth of the Buna, while Shëngjin has a working port and a fishing trade around it. Moving water and harbour water are both different from open sand.
Questions about Shëngjin and Velipojë
A necklace came off while I was lying in the sand at Velipojë.
Put that in your first line. Sand somebody spent hours lying on is a narrower piece of ground than sand they walked across. The tourism agency describes the sand at Velipojë as fine and dark in colour, and says many visitors use it for sun baths rather than a towel. Tell us roughly where on the beach you had settled and what was done to that spot after you left it.
A ring went while we were parked at the panoramic balcony.
A car park gives a search something fixed to work from, which open sand does not. The panoramic balcony on the new Shëngjin to Velipojë road stands on Mali i Rencit above Rana e Hedhun, it has a car park, and the coastal view from it carries along the shore as far as Ulcinj. Give us the space you parked in if you remember it, how far out towards the edge you walked, and whether anything was pulled out of a pocket while you were fetching a coat or a bag.
A wedding band came off up on the dunes at Rana e Hedhun.
The first thing to settle is height: were you up among the dunes or down on the flat sand when you last had it. Rana e Hedhun is formed of sand dunes running up the hillside, and people go there to walk, to climb them and to ride quad bikes across the sand. Then give us the line you took going up and the line you took coming back down.
It went in the sea at Velipojë and we have no idea how far out we were.
The sea at Velipojë is shallow and the depth increases gradually, which works in your favour. Give it as what the water was doing to you rather than as a distance: at your knees, at your waist, or up around your shoulders. Where your feet had left the bottom altogether, that is a long shot, and you would hear that from us first.
An Oura ring went while I was swimming at Shëngjin.
Describe it to us exactly as you would a wedding ring: the colour, the finish, and where it was last on your hand. Shëngjin beach lies west of the city of Lezhë along the Adriatic, with resorts and restaurants along it and water sports off it, so say which part of the beach you went into the water from, and whether you were swimming, standing, or on something being towed.
What about a car key lost around the port at Shëngjin?
Keys belong on this page as much as jewellery does. The port keeps that end of the town busy and fishing is well developed in this area, so quayside and paving come into it as much as sand does. Walk us back through the route between the car and wherever you ended up, and tell us what the key looks like and what else it was attached to.
It happened after dark at Shëngjin and we could see almost nothing.
You can still answer nearly all of what we ask in the dark. Give us the walk instead of the place: where you stepped onto the sand, which way you turned, how far along you got before you turned round, and where you came off again. A walk can be covered even when the exact spot has gone.
