Southeast Wisconsin has two kinds of lake day. One is on Lake Michigan, at Milwaukee, Kenosha or Sheboygan. The other is inland: Geneva Lake, Lac La Belle in Oconomowoc, Rock Lake at Lake Mills, Silver Lake in Kenosha County, Lake Winnebago at Fond du Lac. Lost jewelry at any of them is a small thing in a big place.

Small things need an exact spot
With a pendant or a lost earring, the size of the search area decides almost everything. Before you pack up, take two photos: one towards the water, one back towards something fixed, such as the Beach House on Simmons Island, a lifeguard chair or a pier. Then drop a pin on your phone map.
Ask the lifeguards whether anything has been handed in. Then message us on WhatsApp with the pin, the photos, the day and time, and what the item is made of.

Volleyball sand at Bradford Beach, Milwaukee
Bradford Beach took shape in the late 1920s. Milwaukee Magazine tells how Lincoln Memorial Drive was pushed north along the shore on landfill, and how a point was built to trap the sand. Visit Milwaukee lists wheelchair paths across that sand, beach volleyball and surfing in the winter months. A dive for the ball is one way a hoop earring or a bracelet might come away unnoticed. The same guide has Grant Park Beach, with woods behind the shore, and South Shore Beach, with a marina and a playground.
Kenosha on the big lake, Silver Lake inland
Alford Park, the northernmost of Kenosha's public beaches, is known for beach glass and the rock cairns visitors stack. At Simmons Island a boardwalk leads towards the North Pier Lighthouse. Eichelman sits behind a small jetty, so the water is calmer. Inland, the county's 260-acre (105-hectare) park at Silver Lake has a beach with lifeguards, and the county gives the 2026 beach season as May 23 to September 7. Trevor and Silver Lake are both in the village of Salem Lakes, which counts nine lakes and has a park on Camp Lake at Trevor.
Sheboygan, where the surfers go out in winter
At Deland Park the lower level of the beach house holds a surf rental and snack shack. Wisconsin Public Radio, reporting from what gets called the Malibu of the Midwest, says some of the best months are in the middle of winter, when stronger winds make bigger waves and surfers wear thicker, hooded wetsuits. Pulling a hood on or off could take an earring with it. Kohler-Andrae State Park, also at Sheboygan, has miles of sandy beach below its dunes. The Dunes Cordwalk, a wooden path of about 2 miles (3 km), runs parallel to the lake through the Kohler Park Dunes from the Sanderling Nature Center, so say whether you were on the boards or down on the beach.
Geneva Lake, with a footpath all the way round
Riviera Beach is on Wrigley Drive in Lake Geneva, close to the shore path. The city lists the 2026 season as May 30 to September 7. Williams Bay and Fontana have beaches of their own. The shoreline is about 21 miles (34 km), so tell us whether you were on the path, on the sand or out in the water.
Oconomowoc, Waukesha and the quarry lake at Menomonee Falls
Oconomowoc has City Beach and Bender Beach, on Lac La Belle and Fowler Lake. The city opens them from Memorial Day to Labor Day weekend and rents canoes, kayaks and paddle boards at City Beach. Minooka Park in Waukesha, the largest in the county system at 579 acres (234 hectares), has a swimming pond and beach. Menomonee Park, shared by Menomonee Falls and Lannon, has a 16-acre (6.5-hectare) quarry lake where the county lists swimming and scuba diving, so an Apple Watch lost there may be in wading depth or well beyond it.
Rock Lake at Lake Mills, Lake Winnebago at Fond du Lac
Lake Mills sits on Rock Lake, 1,371 acres (555 hectares) of water. Its two public beaches, Sandy Beach on Sandy Beach Road and Bartel's Beach on South Ferry Drive, both have a boat launch. At Fond du Lac, Lakeside Park on Lake Winnebago rents canoes and kayaks in season. A phone or a pair of glasses could go over the side of either.

We ask which lake before anything else
Lake Winnebago averages 15.5 feet (4.7 metres) deep. The quarry lake at Menomonee Park has scuba divers in it. On Lake Michigan the waves depend on the wind. The same bracelet is a different search in each.

Why a Lake Michigan beach is not the same search as a quarry lake

The sand at Bradford Beach collected behind a point built for the purpose. The beach at Menomonee Park is on a lake left by stone quarrying. For an earring back, the exact spot counts for more than which of these you were on.
Wind does the job a tide does elsewhere
NOAA puts the largest tide on the Great Lakes at less than 2 inches (5 cm). Wind and air pressure move the water instead. They can set up a seiche, a wave that may be several feet high, with four to seven hours between its high and its low.
After Labor Day the surfers take over
Oconomowoc's beaches and the Lakeside Park rentals run from Memorial Day to Labor Day weekend. After that Sheboygan's surfers put on hooded wetsuits, Minooka Park grooms its ski trails and Lake Winnebago freezes over.
Things worth asking before a search at the lake
The clasp on my necklace gave way somewhere on the Geneva Lake shore path, which goes right round the lake. Hopeless?
Not if you can shrink it. Visit Lake Geneva puts the path at almost 26 miles (42 km), and nobody can sweep all of that for a thin chain. A stretch between two piers is different. Find the last photo from the walk where you are wearing it, and send us that.
Bradford Beach looks narrower than I remember. Could the lake now be over the spot where my bracelet fell?
It could. In March 2021 the Shepherd Express reported that Bradford and other lakefront beaches were shrinking as Lake Michigan rose. The level also shifts within a year: NOAA puts the yearly high in late spring and the low in winter. Tell us the date and roughly how many steps from the water you were sitting.
I searched metal detector rental Milwaukee after an earring stud went missing on the sand at South Shore Beach. Hire one, or message you?
Either can be right. Renting a detector yourself can suit a fresh loss on dry sand or a lawn. A detectorist makes more sense for wet sand, water, a large area or a small item, and a stud is about as small as it gets.
Sandy Beach or Bartel's Beach on Rock Lake? I cannot remember which one we were at when my anklet went. Does that sink it?
No. Lake Mills has two public beaches on Rock Lake, Sandy Beach on Sandy Beach Road and Bartel's Beach on South Ferry Drive, and they are easy to mix up afterwards. Pictures from the day usually settle it. Send us what you have and say whether you went in the water.
Dropped my truck keys out on the Lake Winnebago ice off Fond du Lac. Snow everywhere. Anything to be done?
Yes, if they are in the snow on top of the ice. Save a GPS pin now, because the ice will be gone by spring. Keys that went down a fishing hole are another story. The lake averages 15.5 feet (4.7 metres) deep and the odds there are poor.
We live in Trevor and my dad's hearing aid fell out on the beach at Silver Lake Park. He only noticed at home. Where do we start?
Start with the lifeguards. The county has them on duty there from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in season, so ask whether it was handed in. Then work out where his chair was. A whole beach is a poor bet for something that small, but the patch around one chair is a fair one. Send us a pin.
It is November and my ring came off at Deland Park while we watched the surfers. Do you only deal with summer losses?
No, message us in any month. A lost ring in dry sand well back from the water is likely to be where it fell. Closer to the edge is less certain, because Sheboygan gets its strongest winds and biggest waves in the cold months. Tell us how far from the beach house you were.
