George Town waterfront
Lost a wedding ring on the George Town waterfront?
The tenders land on Hog Sty Bay, and Eden Rock and Devil's Grotto are dived without a boat.
A wedding band lost on a shore dive at Eden Rock can be searched for, as can one dropped at a tender landing or on the walk along the harbor. What matters most is whether you can say where you went into the water and where you came out, and roughly how deep you were when you last felt it on your finger.
Ring Seekers is a lost ring and jewelry recovery service that works with experienced local metal detectorists to search for a ring, wedding band, watch, keys or phone lost on the George Town waterfront.
Tell us what happened and where. We choose an experienced detectorist who knows the harbor front or the dive site, brief them with your map and photos, and tell you honestly if the odds are poor.
Empty the dive bag onto a towel
Go through your gear before it goes into a rinse tank or a bag: the pockets of your buoyancy jacket, the inside of wetsuit sleeves and boots, the mesh bag you carried it all in. Then open the map on your phone and mark where you went into the water and where you climbed out, with the time you surfaced. If you had a dive computer on, keep its log for that dive.
This page is for George Town's waterfront: the harbor front on Hog Sty Bay where the tenders come in, the shore dive sites at Eden Rock and Devil's Grotto, and Smith Barcadere in South Sound. Seven Mile Beach, Rum Point and the rest of the islands are on our Cayman Islands page.

Harbor, dive sites and a South Sound cove
The dive sites can be walked to from the cruise port, and Smith Barcadere is south of town near the ports.
Hog Sty Bay and the harbor front
George Town is the capital of the Cayman Islands and a port for Caribbean cruise ships, and its harbor front is on Hog Sty Bay. The Cayman Islands National Museum overlooks the bay, which makes it an easy marker to catch in a photo. The town has duty-free shops, restaurants and art galleries, and it is where glass-bottom boat and submarine tours, parasailing, snorkeling and diving are on offer.
The tender terminals
Cruise ships anchor at George Town, and passengers are ferried ashore to one of three terminals. The harbor front has a North Terminal, a South Terminal and the Royal Watler Pier. Tell us where you stepped ashore and where you boarded the tender back.
Eden Rock
Eden Rock is a dive site you enter from the shoreline, close to George Town, and divers walk to it from the cruise ship port with no boat needed. Its coral is colorful and full of tropical sea life. A pin where you went in and another where you came out give the detectorist the two ends of your dive to work between.
Devil's Grotto
Devil's Grotto sits next to Eden Rock and has underwater caves. If you went through them, say at what point in the dive, and whether you still had the item when you came out.
Smith Barcadere
South of George Town in South Sound, Smith Barcadere is good for children and beginners learning the basics in the water, and there are gift shops with local art nearby. The beach is also known as Smith Cove, so you may see either name on a map.
The part we take on
Nobody new halfway through
The person planning your search reads your messages and reports back afterward. If a detail comes back to you on the flight home, add it to the same chat.
Dive notes count too
If you dived with a computer, the depth and time from its log go to the detectorist along with your pins and photos, together with anything your dive buddy remembers.
After the ship sails
If your ship leaves the same day, send what you have before you go back to the tender. The search can go ahead after you have sailed.
Costs come first
We explain the costs before any search is booked, so you know them before anything is arranged.
The sea off the harbor front
North of the port the seabed is hard-packed in places, and the shallows around the islands do not reach far out.
Hardpan north of the port
Just north of the George Town port there is an area of hardpan, mostly hard-packed seabed with a few small coral colonies. That is different ground from the white sand at Smith Barcadere, and what was under you, hard bottom or sand, goes into the brief.
Shallow reefs close to shore
Shore diving in Cayman means shallow reefs just off the shore, with deep walls also within reach. If the item went during the shallow part of the dive, start your account there.
Wind from the east, winter fronts from the northwest
Usually the wind blows from between east and northeast. From late November to March, cold fronts can bring rough weather from the northwest. Include the date of the loss, since a northwest front and an ordinary east wind make for different days in the harbor.

Questions about the George Town waterfront
Could a wedding band lost on an Eden Rock shore dive have come off before I got into the water?
That is possible, so the walk down to the water counts as part of the search. Eden Rock is dived from the shoreline, so the band may have gone while you were kitting up or getting in, as well as out over the coral. Send one pin for where you went in and one for where you came out, the time of the dive, and the deepest point from your dive computer if you wore one. Say whether you had gloves on and when you took them off.
Devil's Grotto has caves. Does that rule out finding a dropped earring?
Caves change where the detectorist looks first. Devil's Grotto, next to Eden Rock, has underwater caves, so the useful detail is whether the earring was still in when you swam into the caves and when you first noticed it gone. Tell us what kind of earring it is, a stud or a hoop, and the metal. Your dive buddy's memory of the route through the caves is worth adding.
We cannot remember which tender terminal we used, and my necklace was not on when we got back to the ship.
Passengers come ashore at one of three terminals, and the North Terminal, the South Terminal and the Royal Watler Pier are all on the harbor front. The times on your photos from the day may show which one you used. Name the one you landed at and the one you left from if you can, and list the shops or streets you walked in between. Ask the tender crew and your ship's guest services as well, in case it turned up on board.
Our daughter's bracelet is gone after her first snorkel at Smith Barcadere.
Smith Barcadere suits children and beginners learning the basics, so tell us how far she swam from where you were sitting and whether an adult was beside her. Mark your towels on a map and the patch of water she stayed in, and say whether the bracelet was on her wrist in the water or taken off on the sand. A photo from your towels toward the limestone formations helps the detectorist find your spot.
An engagement ring fell over the side of a boat moored in George Town harbor.
Start from the mooring: the captain or crew can tell you which one the boat was on. Boats tie up at dive moorings off the town and at moorings off Pageant Beach, among others, so knowing the exact one narrows the search. Say which side of the boat it went from, and whether anyone saw it hit the water.
A watch fell off during a parasail ride in George Town. How far out is too far?
The water under the boat at that moment is the question. The Cayman Islands have very narrow, shallow coastal shelves before the sea floor plunges steeply, so a watch dropped over the shallows near town is a different case from one dropped beyond them. If the boat had already gone out past the shelf, that is a long shot, and you would hear that from us first. Ask the operator for the route the boat took and where it was when you went up.
We were at South Sound Community Beach, not Smith Barcadere. Is that part of this page?
It is. South Sound Community Beach and Casuarina Beach, known as Consuelo's, are both public beaches in the George Town district, so a pin from either starts a search the same way as one from Smith Barcadere. Spotts Beach and the beaches farther along the coast are on our Cayman Islands page.
