Lost a wedding ring on a Hong Kong beach?

The southern beaches of Hong Kong Island, the Sai Kung bays, Lantau and Lamma.

Hong Kong's public beaches have rafts, barbecue pits and promenades to fix a spot by, so a ring or watch lost on the sand there can often be searched for properly. The remote Sai Kung bays take more planning, and everywhere the key is a precise description of where you were.

Ring Seekers is a lost ring and jewellery recovery service that works with experienced local metal detectorists to search for a ring, wedding band, watch, keys or phone lost in Hong Kong. Tell us what happened and where. We choose an experienced detectorist who knows the beach, brief them with your map and photos, and tell you honestly if the odds are poor.

Repulse Bay in Hong Kong, a curved sandy beach with people, boats on calm water and green hills with tall buildings

Town beaches in the south, wild bays in the east

On the southern coast of Hong Kong Island, Repulse Bay, Deep Water Bay and Stanley are popular public beaches, with promenades, cafes and water sports. Clear Water Bay's beaches, on their own peninsula, are known for good water quality.

Out in Sai Kung East Country Park, the four bays of Tai Long Wan are another matter: secluded, a bit wild and reached on foot along the MacLehose Trail, with waves rushing to shore beneath Sharp Peak. The beaches of southern Lantau have clear water and fine powdery sand away from the hustle, and Lamma's Hung Shing Yeh is known for its sunsets.

Once we have your message

A single point of contact

One person on WhatsApp stays with you from the first questions to the result, and arranges the detectorist in between.

Your landmarks, passed on

The raft you swam to, the barbecue pit, the café on the promenade: your landmarks, pin and photos go to the detectorist before the search.

Straight answers on difficult spots

A loss on the sand at Repulse Bay and one in the surf at Sai Wan are not the same job, and you hear our honest view of yours early.

The first details we need

Which beach, the part of it you were on, the date and time, and whether you were in the water.

Costs, before anything

We explain the costs before any search is booked, and there is no pressure to decide quickly.

Hong Kong beaches we cover

Hong Kong Island's south side first, then the Sai Kung bays, then Lantau and Lamma.

Southern Hong Kong Island, Sai Kung and the outlying islands

Repulse Bay

Repulse Bay Beach is a wide, crescent-shaped beach on the southern coast of Hong Kong Island, with a concrete promenade of cafes and kiosks. The beach has swimming rafts, a playground, a beach volleyball court and self-service storage cages, and the pavilion by the sea is used for weddings. Say whether you were on the sand, on a raft or on the promenade.

Deep Water Bay

Deep Water Bay Beach sits between two headlands and is one of the best-liked public beaches in Hong Kong. The water off the beach is popular with wakeboarders and windsurfers, and there are barbecue pits and storage cages on the shore.

Middle Bay and South Bay

Along South Bay Road from Repulse Bay, Middle Bay and South Bay are public beaches too, each with a raft, barbecue pits and storage cages. If you are not sure which bay it was, tell us how you walked or drove there.

Stanley Main Beach

Stanley Main Beach is known for its scenery, and its water sports centre hires out kayaks, sailing dinghies and windsurfing boards. Nearby, the Stanley Promenade and Stanley Main Street are lined with places to eat and drink by the water, and kaito ferries leave from Blake Pier for Po Toi.

Tai Long Wan: Sai Wan and Ham Tin

Tai Long Wan is made up of four bays: Sai Wan, Ham Tin Wan, Tai Wan and Tung Wan. Sai Wan has a village with several stores and restaurants by its southern beach, and Ham Tin Wan has silky sand, crystal clear water and a view of Sharp Peak. There are campsites at both.

Tai Wan and Tung Wan

Beyond Ham Tin, Tai Wan and Tung Wan complete the four bays. They are remote, scarcely visited on weekdays and reached on foot along the trail, so tell us the route you walked in and where along the bay you stopped.

Clear Water Bay and Silverstrand

The Clear Water Bay First and Second Beaches, on the Clear Water Bay Peninsula, are known for good water quality and scenery, and each has a raft and storage cages. Silverstrand, on Clear Water Bay Road, has a raft and storage cages too.

Southern Lantau

Pui O, Lower Cheung Sha, Upper Cheung Sha and Tong Fuk lie from east to west along southern Lantau, with clear water and fine powdery sand. Upper and Lower Cheung Sha together stretch for 3 km, so say which one you were on and roughly where.

Hung Shing Yeh, Lamma

Hung Shing Yeh Beach, south-east of Yung Shue Wan on Lamma Island, is a popular place to watch the sunset, with a lookout pavilion to the south and a trail on to Sok Kwu Wan.

Arranging a search on a Hong Kong beach

Four simple stages, all over WhatsApp.

1

Tell us what happened

The item, the beach, the day and time, and what you were doing: swimming, sitting on the sand, barbecuing or hiking in.

2

Mark it on a map

A pin where you think it went, and photos of that spot and of the item if you have them.

3

Finding and briefing a detectorist

We look for a metal detectorist who can get there, including the walk-in bays of Sai Kung, and pass on your notes.

4

You decide, then we report

Nothing starts without your yes. Afterwards we send you a summary of the search and its outcome.

Questions about Hong Kong

A ring came off during our wedding photos by the pavilion at Repulse Bay. Is it worth a search?

Very much so, if the photos show where you stood. The pavilion by the sea is used for weddings, and your photographer's pictures show exactly where you stood: send the ones taken just before you noticed, and pin the spots you posed at on the sand.

Tell us which part of the beach you swam out from and whether it went on the climb up, while you sat on the raft or on the swim back. The raft is a fixed point, which helps a detectorist work outwards from it.

Deep Water Bay has barbecue pits and storage cages along the shore, so pin your pit, the cage you used if any, and where you sat on the sand. Say also whether anyone went into the water with the keys in a pocket.

If it went as you launched or landed, the search area is small, so pin those points. The water sports centre hires out kayaks, dinghies and windsurfing boards, and it helps to know which you used and how far out you went.

Ham Tin is a long walk in on the MacLehose Trail, so it is worth pinning your tent spot, the path to the beach and where you swam before a detectorist makes the trip. Photos of the campsite from that evening help us place you.

In the waves themselves it is a long shot, and you would hear that from us first. The sand is a different matter: by the village near the southern beach, or where you left your bags, a search has far more to work with.

Together they stretch for 3 km, so first work out which one: say how you arrived, where you got off the bus or parked, and anything you could see from your spot. Then pin it, even roughly.

Hung Shing Yeh is a popular sunset beach, so photos you took that evening are the best way to show where you sat. Say whether you walked on towards the lookout pavilion afterwards.
