The first hour in your yard
Stop the yard work where it is. Leave the mower and the sprinkler off, and keep children and dogs off the patch. A small earring may get trodden into the turf.
With a lost hearing aid, open the maker's app before anything else. Oticon, for one, says its Companion app has a Find my hearing aids screen with a map, bars that show how close you are to each aid and, if the connection has dropped, when they were last connected.
Next, give the area a shape. Lay the garden hose or some string round the part of the yard you were working in and photograph it. Send that to us on WhatsApp with a dropped pin and the last time you are sure you had the item.

Parks, gardens and lake beaches on both sides of the state line
Loose Park and the rose garden near the Plaza
Near Country Club Plaza, Loose Park holds the Laura Conyers Smith Municipal Rose Garden, a 1.5 acre (0.6 hectare) garden of about 3,000 roses by Visit KC's count. If you were there for photos, the pictures may show when an earring was still in place.
Swope Park and the Berkley Riverfront
Swope Park has golf, shelter houses, picnic areas and athletic fields, so tell us which shelter or field. Berkley Riverfront is just north of downtown, on the south bank of the Missouri River, with a two-mile (3.2 km) trail and places to picnic by the water.
Across the state line in Kansas
Shawnee Mission Park covers 1,756 acres (about 710 hectares) around a 120-acre (49 hectare) lake with a swimming beach and a marina. It also has 11 shelters and a 44-acre (18 hectare) dog off-leash area, by the park district's listing, so say which. In Overland Park, the city's Arboretum and Botanical Gardens has gardens and hiking trails and hosts weddings. If something came off at a wedding there, the order of the day, from ceremony to photos to meal, gives us times to work with.
Longview, Blue Springs, Jacomo and Smithville lakes
Longview Lake is 930 acres (about 375 hectares) of water just minutes from south Kansas City, in the words of Jackson County Parks and Rec, and its one-acre (0.4 hectare) beach has certified lifeguards from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day. Blue Springs Lake has a beach too. Lake Jacomo, in Fleming Park, is the one for sailing boats and pontoons. Smithville Lake has two Clay County beaches on opposite shores, Camp Branch on the east side and Little Platte on the west, so tell us which.
Independence and the river bluffs at Sibley
George Owens Nature Park in Independence is 86 acres (35 hectares), with two fishing lakes, picnic areas and three miles (4.8 km) of hiking trails. For a key fob dropped on a trail, tell us which trail and which way round you walked it. Sibley is further out, beside the Missouri River and about 14 miles (23 km) northeast of Independence by Jackson County Parks' figure. A ring lost in a yard there is handled the same way as one in the city.
Saint Joseph, Warrensburg and Knob Noster
In Saint Joseph, Krug Park, Hyde Park, Bartlett Park and Gordon Park are among the city's parks, and Hyde Park has a splash park. In Warrensburg, Lion's Lake and Culp Park has a three-mile (4.8 km) walking trail, a lake with a fishing dock, a ball field and two playgrounds. Knob Noster State Park is open oak woodland with patches of prairie along Clearfork Creek, with camping, picnic shelters and fishing.

None of the water on this page has a tide. At a swim beach, the questions are how far out you were and how deep: knee, waist or chest.
When the ground freezes and the snow comes
The first fall freeze comes, on average, in late October in Kansas City, by National Weather Service records, and the same office gives the city a 30-year average of about 18 inches (46 cm) of snow in a season. Before the weather turns, mark the spot against something fixed, such as a fence post or a downspout.
Worked examples for a yard, a swim beach and a fishing dock
Dad's hearing aid came out while he was mowing his back yard in Independence. He wants to finish the lawn tomorrow. Should he?
No, the mower stays where it is until the lawn has been checked. Ask him where he took off his cap or his glasses, and mark those places. If his aids have a maker's app, open it too.
My wife is upset about a lost earring, a small gold stud, somewhere in our yard in Overland Park after a cookout. Can anything that small be looked for in a lawn?
It can, and the smaller the patch the better the case. Photograph the spots where she stood and sat that evening: the grill, the drinks table, the patio door. Overland Park is on the Kansas side and this page serves it just the same.
My wedding band came off at the Shawnee Mission Park beach. I was waist deep, in line with the beach house. Is that enough to go on?
It is a good start. Waist deep and a line to the beach house give a detectorist a strip to work, not a whole swim area. Tell the park staff too, in case it is handed in.
We spent Saturday at one of the Smithville Lake beaches and my husband's Apple Watch never came home. I cannot remember which beach it was. Does that matter?
Yes, because the two are on opposite shores: Camp Branch Beach on the east side of the lake, by the marina and the main park office, and Little Platte Beach on the west. Once you know which, tell us whether the watch was last on the sand, in the water or up by the car.
My daughter's chain broke during a sand volleyball game at Longview Lake Beach. We went through the sand with our fingers and found nothing. Have we made it worse?
Hard to say from a distance, so stop there. Note which side of the net she was on and roughly where she stood when it broke, and photograph the court from one corner. A volleyball court is a small, marked area, which is a far better case than open beach.
I lost my Oura ring doing yard work at home in Saint Joseph. The ground will freeze before long. Is there a deadline?
No fixed one, but do the marking now. The first freeze in Saint Joseph comes in mid October on average, going by National Weather Service records, so put stakes at the corners and photograph the area while the ground is bare.
My metal-framed glasses fell off while I was fishing from the dock at Lion's Lake in Warrensburg. If they went in, is that the end of it?
Not until we know where they landed. The dock boards, the bank beside it and the water under it are three different searches. Send a photo of the dock with an arrow where you sat.
