It happens buckling a boot at the Snowbird base, towing a sled back up the hill at Sugar House Park, or clearing your own driveway before work. Ski Utah puts Snowbird's average at about 500 inches (12.7 metres) of snow a year, so there is plenty for a ring to land in. With a lost ring in snow, the first useful thing is to stop walking over the spot and mark it.

Plant a marker before you go back inside
Stand where you were when the glove came off and push a ski pole, a sled or a stick upright into the snow. Take one photo facing the slope or the street and one facing the lodge or your front door, so the marker shows against something fixed. Drop a pin and write down the time. If you have already dug by hand, tell us how wide a patch, because a ring may have been pushed further down.

Park City Mountain has two base areas
Ski Utah places Park City Mountain in the heart of Park City, a 35-minute drive from Salt Lake City International Airport, with two base areas, one of them Canyons Village. A base area is where gloves come off, to buckle a boot or take a photo, and a ring could leave with the glove. Tell us which base, and what you were standing next to.
Snowbird and Brighton up the two Cottonwood canyons
Snowbird is six miles (about 10 km) up Little Cottonwood Canyon, with its base at 7,760 feet (2,365 metres). Brighton is in Big Cottonwood Canyon, 30 miles (48 km) from downtown Salt Lake City, at 8,755 feet (2,669 metres). Brighton has night skiing, so a bracelet or an Apple Watch could go missing after dark. Note which lights or building you were near.
Sledding at Sugar House Park, tubing at Woodward and Soldier Hollow
Salt Lake County describes Sugar House Park as a 110-acre (about 45 hectare) park with a large pond and hilly areas ideal for sledding. Visit Utah counts two main hills, one reached from 1700 East and the other from 1300 East, and lists Flat Iron Mesa Park in Sandy and Rock Canyon Park in Provo too. The tubing lanes at Woodward Park City and at Soldier Hollow in Midway are 1,200 feet (about 365 metres) long, so tell us which lane and how far down you were.
Jordanelle, Deer Creek and Utah Lake
Jordanelle State Park sits above the Heber Valley in Wasatch County, minutes from Park City, with three recreation areas: Hailstone, Rock Cliff and Ross Creek. Deer Creek State Park invites people to windsurf, boat, zip line and swim on its reservoir. Utah Lake State Park has a marina and an RV campground on what it calls the largest freshwater lake in Utah, roughly 148 square miles (about 383 square km).
Salt water at Antelope Island and Great Salt Lake State Park
Antelope Island State Park, which has a Syracuse address, invites visitors to stroll along sandy beaches and take a dip in the lake's salty waters. Great Salt Lake State Park has boat slips, viewpoints and a one-mile (1.6 km) walk from Sunset Beach to Black Rock. Timpanogos Cave and the Bear River refuge
In American Fork Canyon, the paved trail to Timpanogos Cave climbs 1,100 feet (335 metres) in 1.5 miles (2.4 km), with overlooks along the cliff edge. By Brigham City, north of Ogden, Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge has 1.5 miles of trails round its visitor center and a 12-mile (19 km) one-way auto tour loop through the marshes. Snow depth, cleared driveways and reservoir shores
A foot of snow in a valley December, hundreds of inches up the canyons
For Salt Lake City, the National Weather Service's long-term averages come to about a foot (30 cm) of snow in both December and January, with the first measurable snow in early November. Ski Utah's resort averages run from 360 inches (9.1 metres) at Park City Mountain to 500 inches (12.7 metres) at Snowbird.
Shovels, snow blowers and the pile by the kerb
On a driveway the snow gets shovelled, blown onto the lawn or pushed to the kerb, and a ring that came off while you were clearing could be in a pile as easily as on the concrete. Tell us which side the snow was thrown.
Reservoir sand from Pineview to Hyrum
Anderson Cove on Pineview Reservoir, in Ogden Valley at 5,000 feet (1,524 metres), has a swimming beach and a boat ramp. Hyrum State Park, roughly 20 minutes from downtown Logan, describes an excellent beach in summer. Tell us where the waterline was on the day and how far from it you were.
Snow questions first, one from the reservoir last
Pulled a glove off at the Snowbird base an hour ago and my wedding band is somewhere in the snow. The lifts close soon. What first?
Leave the snow as it is. Ask whoever is with you to stand on the spot while you photograph them from two sides, with a building or a lift sign behind them, then plant a pole there and drop a pin. Tell guest services too, in case someone hands it in.
Sledding at Sugar House Park, on the hill off 1300 East, my dad pulled his hat off and one hearing aid went with it. Now it is snowing. All I find under metal detecting Utah is hobby clubs. Who does this?

I lost my ring shovelling the driveway in Sandy last night and it has snowed again since. Should I wait for the melt?
No need to wait before telling us. Leave the piles where they are and send a photo of the driveway showing where the snow was thrown. A driveway in the valley sees far less snow than a resort base, so there is no reason to hold on until spring.
The ring is somewhere in our small front lawn in Bountiful, and my brother keeps sending me links for metal detector rental Salt Lake City. Should I just do that?
For a small lawn and a loss from today, yes, try it. Renting suits a fresh loss on grass or dry sand. We would point you to a detectorist instead for snow, water, a wet shoreline, a big area such as a tubing lane, or something as tiny as an earring.
My iPhone went out of my jacket somewhere at the Brighton base during night skiing. Find My still shows a dot from last night but the battery must be dead. Is that dot any use?
It may be. Apple says that when a battery has run out, Find My can show a device's last known location for up to seven days, and after that it shows No location found. So screenshot the dot today and send it with where you parked.
My wife's diamond earring is somewhere in the snow outside our Park City rental and our flight is tomorrow morning. Is it pointless to ask?
No. A search does not need you there. Take the photos before you go: the front of the house, the path she walked and the matching earring, plus a pin. Let the owner or manager know, so someone can give access.
My son's chain came off in the water at the Anderson Cove swimming beach on Pineview, about waist deep. We are only in Ogden. Can anything be done?
Quite possibly. Anderson Cove is 10 miles (16 km) east of Ogden, well inside the area we cover. Tell us how far out from the sand he was standing and what on shore he was level with.
