Lost a ring in Romania?

Bridges from the north and the south, roses over the walks and the lake all round: the island gives you landmarks enough to place the moment.

A ring dropped on Rose Island is worth a search, because its walks and the ground beside them are open to a metal detector. The lake is the big question: a ring that stayed on the path or the grass is a far easier search than one that went over the edge, and after that it comes down to how exactly you can place where you knelt.

Ring Seekers is a lost ring and jewellery recovery service that works with experienced local metal detectorists to search for a ring, wedding band, watch, keys or phone lost in Romania. Tell us what happened and where. We choose an experienced detectorist who knows the park or the beach, brief them with your map and photos, and tell you honestly if the odds are poor.

Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca and Brașov get their detail here. The seaside, Sulina to Vama Veche, has two pages of its own: one for Constanța and the resorts either side of it, and one for Mangalia and the far south.

Straw parasols and wooden sunbeds on the beach at Mamaia Nord, Romania, in soft morning light by the Black Sea

Away from the sea, the water is inside the parks

On the coast, a search means sand, shallow sea, lake shores and promenades, described resort by resort on the two area pages. In Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca and Brașov it means alleys, lawns and park lakes. King Michael I Park is laid out around Lake Herăstrău, where boats go out from the landings, and Lacul Tineretului has a landing of its own for boat trips.

Cluj-Napoca's Central Park lies on the bank of the Someșul Mic, next to the city centre, with a lake inside it. In Brașov, the Noua park is dominated by a lake where boats and water bikes go out.

What you can expect once you write

Same number from Mamaia to Brașov

There is one WhatsApp number for the whole country. Whoever answers your first message stays with the case until the detectorist's report has been passed back to you.

Your phrases reach the detectorist

Along with your pins and photos, the detectorist is sent the words you used, so a phrase like the bridge by the landing or the path past the Casino means the same to them as it does to you.

Three things to have ready

The place on a map, a picture of the item or the box it came in, and the time you last saw it on you. Anything else we ask as the chat goes on.

Costs to talk over at home

We explain the costs before any search is booked. Talk them over with your partner, your family or your jeweller first if you like.

The coast has two pages; the city parks are described here

The city parks below are described only on this page. For a loss by the sea, look at the opening pair of cards, which name what each seaside page takes in.

Resorts by the sea, parks in the cities

Constanța, Mamaia and the north coast

In Constanța, Plaja Modern, the Casino waterfront and the Tomis tourist port. Then Mamaia with its promenade and Lake Siutghiol, Mamaia Nord and Năvodari, and south through Agigea and Eforie to Techirghiol and Tuzla. Above Năvodari the same page takes in Corbu, Jurilovca, Gura Portiței and Sulina.

Mangalia and the southern resorts

Costinești, then the resorts that belong to Mangalia: Olimp, Neptun with La Steaguri beach, Jupiter, Cap Aurora, Venus and Saturn. Mangalia town itself and the villages of 2 Mai and Vama Veche complete it.

King Michael I Park (Herăstrău), Bucharest

Rose Island (Insula Trandafirilor) is one of the sights of the park, out on Lake Herăstrău with water on either side. Roses are trained over its walks, and bridges reach it from the north, near the Herăstrău landing, and from the side facing the Village Museum. Rowing boats and water bikes are hired at the Central Herăstrău-Miorița landing, and boats cross the lake from the Garofița landing.

Parcul Tineretului, Bucharest

The park was laid out on uneven ground, shaped to set off Lacul Tineretului, and the lake has a landing for boat trips. The Sala Polivalentă stands at one edge, the park reaches east to the Palatul Național al Copiilor, and Orășelul Copiilor, an amusement area for children, fills its south-eastern corner.

Central Park, Cluj-Napoca

The Parcul Central Simion Bărnuțiu lies beside the Someșul Mic, right by the city centre, with a triple alley running through it as its main axis and a lake inside it. The old Casino in the park is now a centre for urban culture, where exhibitions, fairs and festivals are held and couples come for their civil weddings.

Parcul Nicolae Titulescu, Brașov

A large park that dominates the centre of Brașov, with winding alleys and many kinds of trees and flowers. Because it lies next to the Casa Căsătoriilor, it becomes the setting for wedding photos on summer weekends.

Parcul Noua and its lake, Brașov

The park sits in generous natural surroundings, dominated by a lake with boats and water bikes, and it has a place set aside for picnics.

Getting a search arranged in Romania

You can start while still in the park, or days later from home.

1

The rough version first

Write to us on WhatsApp with the item, the day, and whether it was a resort on the coast or a park in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca or Brașov.

2

Mark the place, show the piece

Drop a pin where you believe it fell, then send what you have: the spot as it looked that day or looks now, and the item on you or in its box.

3

A detectorist takes it on

We contact metal detectorists near enough to get to that park or beach. The one who agrees gets your map, photos and notes to plan from.

4

The report in the same chat

The day is fixed once you say yes. The detectorist reports back straight after, and we pass it on in your WhatsApp chat, with the ground covered and anything found.

Questions about Romania

The ring for my proposal slipped out of my hand on Rose Island in Herăstrău.

The place you knelt is the centre of everything. Rose Island has water on either side and roses over its walks, and bridges lead onto it from the north, near the Herăstrău landing, and from the side facing the Village Museum. Tell us which bridge you came over, how far along the island you had walked, and whether the ring could have gone over the edge into the lake.

Which landing was it? Boats are hired at the Central Herăstrău-Miorița landing, and the Garofița landing serves the crossings. Tell us if the phone dropped onto the landing, slipped between the boat and the edge, or went over the side on the open lake, which is between 1 and 5 m deep. If it sank far out, it is a long shot, and you would hear that from us first.

Treat it as two places. Orășelul Copiilor is the amusement area in the south-eastern corner of the park, and the lake, with its landing for boat trips, is the other half of your afternoon. Pin the rides you went on and the stretch of shore you walked, say whether anyone took a boat out, and describe the back of the earring.

The triple alley is the park's main axis, so tell us where you joined it and where you turned off. After that, the lake and the old Casino are the landmarks most people can place themselves by. Pin the spot where you first noticed a bare wrist, and say whether you sat down anywhere on the way.

The photographer's pictures are the best map you have. The park is beside the Casa Căsătoriilor and its alleys wind, so one session of photos can cover a good part of it. Find the last frame where the band is still on his finger, then pin each place you posed after it.

Start from the picnic place the park sets aside. Pin where you sat and where you left the car, say whether anyone took a boat or a water bike out, and tell us what the fob looks like.

Yes. Being back home makes no difference to the search itself. The detectorist goes by what you send: a pin on the place you entered the sea or spread out on the sand, any holiday picture taken near that spot, and a close-up of the ring. The beach and promenade at Mamaia are set out in full on the Constanța, Mamaia and the north coast page.

Which lake, park or beach was it?

Name the bridge on Rose Island, the boat landing at Lacul Tineretului or the part of the beach at Neptun, and we can work from there. Open WhatsApp, write what you lost, and send us the map pin.
