Down the coast from Cherry Grove to Hilton Head, then inland
Grand Strand piers and the quiet southern beaches
Cherry Grove Pier in North Myrtle Beach reaches 985 feet (300 metres) into the Atlantic, and the concrete pier at Surfside Beach 814 feet (248 metres). Between them, Myrtle Beach has its Boardwalk and two more piers. At the quiet southern end, Pawleys Island is a barrier island less than 4 miles (6.4 km) long. More on Myrtle Beach.
Barrier islands on either side of Charleston Harbor
Folly Beach has a pier about 1,045 feet (318 metres) long and, at the Washout, the biggest surf on the island. Sullivan's Island is quieter, and a lost ring on its wide, dry sand tends to stay where it fell. We have had an enquiry from Sullivan's Island. At the east end of Folly, a short walk from the end of East Ashley Street through Lighthouse Inlet Heritage Preserve reaches a beach facing the Morris Island Lighthouse. North of Charleston, a ferry from Garris Landing crosses to Bulls Island in Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge, where Boneyard Beach is strewn with fallen live oaks bleached by salt and sun. Hilton Head and the beaches towards Beaufort
Hilton Head has about 12 miles (19 km) of beach. Coligny is the busy part, while Folly Field is flat, firm sand that suits bikes and kites. Hunting Island State Park, near Beaufort, has five miles (8 km) of beach, among the fastest eroding on the East Coast. More on Hilton Head Island.
Columbia, Clemson, Berkeley County and the lakes
In Columbia the Saluda and the Broad meet to form the Congaree, and downstream at Hopkins, Congaree National Park has a 2.6-mile (4.2 km) boardwalk loop from its visitor center through old-growth bottomland forest. Lake Murray lies to the west. Dreher Island State Park, which the park puts at 30 miles (48 km) from Columbia, has 12 miles (19 km) of shoreline on the lake. Clemson sits on the shore of Lake Hartwell in the foothills of the Blue Ridge, with the South Carolina Botanical Garden in town. Lake Hartwell State Park is at Fair Play, by the Georgia border.
Lake Marion is the largest lake in the state, and Santee State Park has cabins built on piers over it. Lake Moultrie is in Berkeley County, north of Charleston. So is Moncks Corner, where Cypress Gardens is a 170 acre (69 hectare) preserve around a blackwater swamp of cypress and tupelo.

Tide, sea temperature, lake beds and fairways
Bigger tides to the south, warm sea all summer
NOAA gives a mean range of 5.02 feet (1.53 metres) at Springmaid Pier in Myrtle Beach, 5.22 feet (1.59 metres) in Charleston Harbor and 6.92 feet (2.11 metres) at Fort Pulaski, the nearest station to Hilton Head. There are two low tides a day, and on flat sea island sand each one uncovers a wide strip. The sea at Springmaid Pier averaged 82 to 85 F (28 to 29 C) in July and August of 2024 and 2025, and 48 to 52 F (9 to 11 C) in January.
Lakes that stay put, rivers that do not
Lake Marion covers 110,000 acres (about 44,500 hectares) and Lake Hartwell 56,000 acres (about 22,700 hectares). A phone or a ring that goes in off a dock tends to stay close, and depth is what counts. The Saluda in Columbia is different, a cold tailwater of around 53 F (12 C) that keeps moving.
Fairways, rough and garden lawns
The state tourism office counts more than 350 golf courses, 87 of them around Myrtle Beach. What makes a course or a garden lawn searchable is a small marked patch: the hole and the side of the fairway, or the bench you sat on.
Beach walks, golf rounds, docks and rivers, case by case
Mum lost a hearing aid somewhere on her morning walk along the beach on Hilton Head. Is a search realistic?
Only once the walk has been narrowed down. A lost hearing aid is tiny, and a whole morning's route is too much sand to cover. Ask her where she last adjusted it, or took off a hat. Tell us the time too, because sand she crossed at low water may have been under the sea since.
A wave took my prescription glasses off my face at Isle of Palms. Should I wait and see if they wash in?
We would not wait. Moving water can push things along the beach and cover them with sand. Mark where you stood against something fixed on Front Beach and note the time. If the water was shallow and the tide was going out, look at the next low tide. Plastic frames give a detector little to find, so lost glasses are partly a search by eye. Go in daylight.
I took my watch off for a round of golf near Myrtle Beach and it never made it back to the bag. Can you help?
Yes, if you can name the holes. Ring the pro shop first, because a lost watch may already have been handed in or found in a cart. If not, tell us the hole where you took it off and the last one where you are sure you had it. A few marked patches of rough is a fair search. Eighteen holes is not.
His wedding band came off throwing a football in waist-deep water at North Myrtle Beach yesterday. What are the chances?
Fair if you can place the spot, poor if you cannot. The mean tide range at Springmaid Pier is 5.02 feet (1.53 metres), so water that was waist deep near high tide may be bare wet sand at low tide. Line the spot up with a pier or a beach access number and send us the time.
My Oura ring slipped off while I was swimming off a dock on Lake Murray. Can a lake be searched?
Yes, where the water is shallow enough to wade. A lake has no tide and no surf, so a ring that sinks beside a dock should still be close to it. Deeper than that is a diver's job. Lake Murray covers 50,000 acres (about 20,200 hectares), so we need a map pin on the dock itself.
We fly home from Charleston tomorrow. Is a metal detector rental worth it for an engagement ring lost in dry sand on Folly Beach?
It can be. Renting one yourself can suit a fresh loss on dry sand or a lawn, when you know the spot to within a few steps. For wet sand, water, a large area or a small item such as an earring, a detectorist makes more sense. Take a pin and photos before you leave, and a search can go ahead once you are home.
I lost my car keys and fob on the grass where we parked for a game in Clemson. Is that too far inland for you?
