Cozumel, Mahahual and Bacalar

Cozumel's two coasts, the Mahahual malecón and the road down to Xcalak, and the lagoon at Bacalar.
Car keys that went missing on a beach day on Cozumel, or on a drive down to Mahahual or Bacalar, can be searched for once you can narrow down where they fell: on the sand, in water you could stand in, or on the way back to the car. What decides it most is which of those it was, and how closely you can mark the place.

Cozumel is easy to get around in a rented car or jeep. Mahahual and Bacalar both belong to the Grand Costa Maya, in the south of Quintana Roo.
Your first pin goes where the car was parked
Shake out the towels and the beach bag where you sat, and check the footwells and seat gaps of the car. On your phone's map, drop pins on the parking spot, your place on the sand and the point where you went in, and on where you came out if you snorkeled or floated. Note the time you last remember holding the key.
On Cozumel, say which coast you were on: the west side is sheltered and the east side faces the open sea. Mahahual has the reef just off the beach, and Bacalar is on a lagoon, not the sea.

Cozumel, then south along the Costa Maya to Bacalar

San Miguel and the sheltered west coast
San Miguel is the main town, with a malecón where people watch the sunset. The island's west coast is the sheltered one, with calm, clear water and almost all of its beach clubs. Chankanaab, a park on this shore, has a beach and a saltwater lagoon for snorkeling.
Playa Palancar
Playa Palancar is on the southwest coast, far enough from town to stay quiet. Palancar Reef lies a few meters offshore, and snorkel and dive boats leave from this beach. The reef has shallow coral gardens and deeper stretches where a wall drops toward the open sea.
Playa El Cielo
El Cielo is reached only by sea. Its name comes from the starfish living in its shallow water. Everyone arrives by boat, so for a phone or ring lost here, the name of the tour and the time come first.
Punta Sur, Chen Río and the east coast
Punta Sur, at the southern tip, is an ecological park, with mangroves, lagoons and reef around its beach, and the Celarain lighthouse. Up the east side the coast faces the open Caribbean, with no reef to slow the swell, and surfers come when there is one. At Chen Río a ledge of rock shelters a stretch of calm water. The road across the island meets this coast at Playa Mezcalitos.
The Mahahual malecón
Mahahual is an old fishing village, and its life runs along the malecón, a promenade for walking and cycling by the sea. The beach beside it has calm, shallow water, and it livens up when a cruise ship is in at the Costa Maya terminal. The Mahahual lighthouse marks the entrance to the village.
Punta Herradura, Playa Uvero and Xcalak
Punta Herradura, a little south of the village, is quieter than the malecón. Playa Uvero, north of Mahahual, is a long, natural beach with coconut palms and the reef close to shore. Xcalak is a tiny fishing village just before the border with Belize, with a white sand beach in front of it and reef, seagrass and mangroves around it, known for bonefishing. Out at sea, Banco Chinchorro is a coral atoll of reefs, shallow lagoons and mangrove cays, where boats from Mahahual take divers.
Bacalar and the Laguna de los Siete Colores
Bacalar is a small town on the Laguna de los Siete Colores, whose shades of blue come from its changing depth and white limestone bottom. The lagoon is fed by cenotes, natural wells of fresh water. Near the shore it is warm and shallow and gets deeper little by little, and people swim, float on inflatable rings and paddleboard. The Fuerte de San Felipe looks out over the water.
Cenote Azul, Cocalitos and Los Rápidos
Cenote Azul is right by the road at the south entrance to town, and people swim, snorkel and dive in it. Cocalitos, south of town along the lagoon shore, has shallow, warm water with hammocks and swings set up in it. At Los Rápidos, the lagoon narrows into a channel with a constant current.

A current along the west coast of Cozumel
A constant current runs along Cozumel's west coast, and divers let it carry them over the reef. If something went on a drift dive or a snorkel from a boat, mark where you went in and where the boat picked you up.
Clear, shallow water inside the Mahahual reef
Off Mahahual a lagoon forms between the beach and the reef, and its water is so shallow and calm that people paddling a kayak can see the bottom. If you took a photo from the water or from a kayak, send it along with whether you were wading, swimming or paddling.
Where the cenotes open up at Bacalar
At Cenote Negro the pale turquoise shallows end at a sharp line and the water turns almost black, because the bottom drops to more than 90 meters. Cenote Azul is about as deep. Something that sank in the deep part of a cenote is a long shot, and you would hear that from us first.
Questions about Cozumel, Mahahual and Bacalar
The jeep key was in my pocket when I swam at Chen Río. Where should the search start?
Chen Río is on the east side of Cozumel, facing the open Caribbean, where the waves come in hard. A ledge of rock there closes off a stretch of calm, shallow water, and outside it the currents can be strong. Tell us whether you stayed inside the rocks, then pin where the jeep was parked and where you left your things, since the key may have come out on the walk down as easily as in the water.
How far out is the reef at Playa Palancar? A wedding band came off while I was snorkeling.
Palancar Reef lies a few meters offshore, and the snorkel boats leave from the beach itself. So the first question is how you got to the reef, swimming from the sand or on a boat. Add roughly what time it was, and where on the beach your towels were.
Our ship was in at Costa Maya, and a bracelet went missing somewhere along the Mahahual malecón.
The malecón has the sea on one side and small beach clubs, craft shops and restaurants on the other. Tell us the restaurant or shop nearest to where you sat, whether you went into the water, and which way you walked back to the ship. Once you have sailed, the search is planned from the details you sent.
Is the coral close to the beach at Punta Herradura? I think an earring came off while I was snorkeling there.
At Punta Herradura, a little south of Mahahual on the coast road to Xcalak, a short swim from the shore takes you over heads of coral. Tell us where you went in, how long you were out, and whether you could see coral below you when you noticed.
My sunglasses went while I was floating down Los Rápidos.
Los Rápidos is just south of Bacalar, where the lagoon narrows into a channel with a constant current, and people let it carry them along. Tell us where you got in, where you climbed out, and when you noticed the glasses were gone.
Does it matter whether I was over pale water or dark water when my ring slipped off near Cenote Esmeralda?
It does. Cenote Esmeralda is on the west shore of the lagoon, between Cenote Negro and Cocalitos. Near the edge the water is calm and clear, but the center is a deep well. Say where your board was, and send any photo showing the color of the water around you.
Our Bacalar boat tour stopped at the Canal de los Piratas and two cenotes, and my watch was gone by the end. Where do you start?
With the order of the stops. Lagoon boat tours take in places such as the Canal de los Piratas, Cocalitos and Cenote Negro. The canal is a narrow, shallow passage with a sandy bottom, linking the lagoon with the Río Hondo. Tell us at which stops you got into the water, and when you last saw the watch.
