Lost a ring in Lake Balaton, Hungary?
Slowly deepening water on the south side of Balaton, calm water at Velence, and lawns and riverbanks in Budapest.
On the southern shore of Lake Balaton the water deepens slowly, which helps when a ring has gone near a beach. The details that decide a search are which beach it was, where you went into the lake and the depth of water you were standing in.
Ring Seekers is a lost ring and jewellery recovery service that works with experienced local metal detectorists to search for a ring, wedding band, watch, keys or phone lost in Hungary. Tell us what happened and where. We choose an experienced detectorist who knows the beach, the lake or the park, brief them with your map and photos, and tell you honestly if the odds are poor.
Budapest is covered here too, from Margaret Island and City Park to the Danube promenades, along with Lake Velence and Lake Tisza.
Three big lakes and a river through the capital
For most Hungarians, summer means Lake Balaton first. It is the country's largest lake, and along its southern shore the water deepens slowly, as it does at the Eastern Beach in Balatonföldvár. Its lakeside towns each have their own beaches, from Alsóörs and Balatonakali to Keszthely, Balatonfenyves and Fonyód. Lake Velence has a calm, steady surface and reed beds to paddle through, and on Lake Tisza the beaches range from a slowly deepening sandy bay at Abádszalók to a pier system for swimmers at Tiszafüred.
In Budapest, Margaret Island sits in the middle of the Danube between Margaret Bridge and Árpád Bridge, City Park has a boating lake among its lawns, and Kopaszi Dam on the Buda side and the Római-part in northern Óbuda follow the river.
Our side of it
A person, not a switchboard
Your messages go to one person, who plans the search with you and passes on the result. Nothing gets lost between departments, because there are none.
Photos over guesswork
The detectorist sees your pin and photos before setting off, so they walk onto the right stretch of beach or bank rather than working the whole shore.
If the odds are long
A ring that slipped off far out in the open water of a lake is a long shot, and you would hear that from us first.
The costs, early on
We explain the costs before any search is booked. Question them as much as you want.

Balaton beaches, two more lakes and Budapest by the Danube
The Balaton towns come first, then Velence and Tisza, then the parks and riverbanks of Budapest.
Lake beaches, parks and riverbanks
Balatonföldvár and Zamárdi
The Eastern Beach at Balatonföldvár has the slowly deepening, smooth water typical of the southern shore, and a sailing centre where you can rent a surfboard. Zamárdi's natural beach also rents surfboards and has a surf school where beginners can try it.
Keszthely and Vonyarcvashegy
Keszthely's City Beach rents out motorboats. The Lido Beach in Vonyarcvashegy is known as one of the sportiest beaches on the lake and has a new walkway, which gives you something fixed to measure your spot from.
Balatonfenyves and Fonyód
The free beach on Csalogány Street in Balatonfenyves has changing rooms, showers, lockers for valuables, playgrounds and beach attendants. The Sándortelep Panorama beach in Fonyód has sand, sunbathing islands and water playgrounds, and is a family favourite.
Alsóörs and Balatonakali
The Municipal Beach in Alsóörs has a children's grove and playground and outdoor fitness equipment. At Mandulavirág Beach in Balatonakali the grassy areas have been renovated.
Lake Velence
Sirály beach at Gárdony has a campsite right next to it, and kayaks, SUPs and pedal boats for exploring the water among the reed beds. The calm, steady surface suits beginners. Velence's Northern Beach rents out SUPs, surfboards and kayaks as well.
Lake Tisza
Each beach on Lake Tisza has its own character. Abádszalók is a slowly deepening, sandy bay busy with water sports. Sarud has a campsite and kayak, canoe and pedal boat hire, Poroszló is known as child-friendly, Tiszafüred is for swimmers and has a pier system, and Tiszanána is the quiet one.
Margaret Island and City Park
Margaret Island has almost no car traffic, a rubber running track along the riverbank, a musical fountain and vast lawns where people picnic and play badminton, football and frisbee. City Park, a few minutes from the centre by metro, has a lake for boating in summer, grassy areas and broad promenades.
Kopaszi Dam and the Római-part
Kopaszi Dam is a landscaped riverside promenade on the Buda side near Rákóczi Bridge, with wide level paths, benches, playgrounds and cafés. The Római-part runs along the Danube in northern Óbuda, with a pebbled riverside alley, a bike path and a row of boathouses.

Questions about Hungary
I swam at Balatonföldvár's Eastern Beach and came out without my wedding band.
The water there deepens slowly, so the distance you swam or waded out matters. Pin your way into the water and your towel, then describe the depth at the farthest point you reached, knee, waist or chest. If you also sailed or surfed that day, tell us.
Our car keys disappeared at the Csalogány Street beach in Balatonfenyves.
That beach has lockers for valuables, changing rooms and showers, so first say whether the keys were ever in a locker or a changing room. Then pin where you lay on the beach and your route back to the car park.
A watch went missing during my surf lesson at Zamárdi.
The surf school works from the natural beach, so pin where your group met, the stretch of water you practised in and where you came ashore at the end. Say at which point in the lesson you last noticed it.
I dropped my phone from a kayak among the reeds at Gárdony.
Mark where you set off from Sirály beach, the way you paddled through the reeds and the spot where you think it went in. A photo taken from the kayak with the shore in view is worth sending.
An earring went somewhere around the pier at Tiszafüred.
Tiszafüred's beach has a pier system built for swimmers, so say which part of it you used, whether you swam from it or sat on it, and where you lay on the beach afterwards.
Our engagement ring went missing during a picnic on Margaret Island.
The lawns there are vast, so a pin on your picnic spot matters most. Tell us which bridge you came from, Margaret Bridge or Árpád Bridge, what was near you, such as the musical fountain or the running track, and whether you played football or frisbee.
My son's bracelet came off while we were boating on the lake in City Park.
If it fell into the water, tell us roughly where on the lake you were. If there is a chance it dropped on the grass or the promenades afterwards, mark those spots as well, since the park is large and the route matters.
I lost my keys somewhere along the Római-part in Óbuda.
The Római-part runs along the Danube with a pebbled riverside alley, a bike path and boathouses. Tell us where you joined it, how far you walked or cycled and where you stopped. Say too whether you think the keys went on the pebbles or into the river.
