The free beach at Piazzale Boscovich lies on the south side of the porto canale, and the canal's pier is a fixed point to take bearings from.

Each town gives you a different landmark
Rimini writes a beach area number on the roofs of its beach cabins, so that a rescue helicopter can find the place. Note the number above the cabins nearest to you: it marks the same stretch of sand when a detectorist arrives. Several free beaches in Riccione face a piazzale, and the name of that piazzale does the same job. In Milano Marittima it is the street you walked down to the sand, even one known only by a number.
Say too whether it went on the sand or in the water, and if in the water, whether your feet still touched the bottom. Add a pin and the time.

Free beaches, piers and piazzali on the Romagna coast
Rimini and Riccione meet at the Rio Marano. Milano Marittima is part of the comune of Cervia, and fine sand runs along both.
Marina Centro and the Parco del Mare, Rimini
The Parco del Mare is the redeveloped seafront of Rimini, with green spaces, cycle paths and walks. At Marina Centro the beach facing it stays open all year, with beach tennis and beach volleyball courts. The Belvedere on Piazzale Kennedy and the nearby Giardini Arpesella are easy places to pin.
Piazzale Boscovich, the porto canale and the palata, Rimini
The largest free beach in Rimini is at Piazzale Boscovich, on the south side of the porto canale, with the white lighthouse on Largo Boscovich behind it and the palata, the pier, beside it. Across the canal, San Giuliano Mare also has a free beach, in the Darsena area.
Torre Pedrera to Rivabella, and Bellariva to Miramare, Rimini
North of the porto canale, the seafront from Torre Pedrera to Rivabella is now a pedestrian promenade. To the south, the new Parco del Mare seafront reaches Bellariva and Marebello and the Lungomare Spadazzi at Miramare. Miramare has one of the larger free beaches, and another lies at Marano, where Rimini meets Riccione.
Viale Ceccarini and Piazzale Roma, Riccione
Viale Ceccarini links the railway station in Riccione with the sea and ends at Piazzale Roma, the square with the Bosco della Pioggia fountain where the main summer concerts are held. A free beach lies in front of the piazzale, and the Lungomare della Libertà runs between Piazzale del Porto and Piazzale Roma.
Free beaches along the Riccione seafront
At the northern edge of Riccione, the Lungomare della Costituzione runs from Piazzale Azzarita to the bridge over the Rio Marano, beside the pedestrian Passeggiata Goethe. The Lungomare della Repubblica follows the beach in the south of town. Free beaches lie in front of Piazzale Azzarita, Piazzale Allende and Piazzale San Martino, and there are several on Via Torino, which follows much of the southern seafront.
Rotonda Primo Maggio, Viale Gramsci and Viale Forlì, Milano Marittima
From the Rotonda Primo Maggio, the heart of Milano Marittima, you reach Viale Gramsci, its most central pedestrian street, lined with bars and shops. The free beach is at Viale Forlì. Some streets here are numbered Traverse rather than named, and a Traversa number places you just as well. Between the 19th and 22nd Traverse, the beach in front of the former Colonia Varese keeps its sand dunes and has no umbrellas. Inland, a pinewood with a dense network of paths stretches between Milano Marittima and Cervia.
Piazza Garibaldi, Porta Mare and Lungomare Deledda, Cervia
From Piazza Garibaldi, in the centre of Cervia, the Porta Mare arch leads to Viale Roma, one of the main links to the seafront. Turn towards the canal and Torre San Michele comes into view. The porto canale, once dug to carry salt from the salt pan to the sea, is now a harbour for pleasure boats, with Via Nazario Sauro along it. The big free beach is on Lungomare Grazia Deledda. Guided walks, a little train and electric boats into the Salina di Cervia leave from its visitors centre on Via Bova.

Sand under shallow water
Off Rimini, and again off Cervia and Milano Marittima, the seabed near the beach is shallow and sandy. At Rimini the beach slopes gently into the sea.
Rock barriers against erosion
Along parts of the Rimini coast, barriers of big rocks were placed in the sea to hold back erosion. If one was near you, get it into a photo from the beach. Something that slipped down between those rocks is a long shot, and you would hear that from us first.

The free beach at Piazzale Boscovich lies on the south side of the porto canale, and the water in front of it is shallow, as it is along the rest of Rimini's shore. Two fixed points help place you in the sea: the pier of the porto canale and the white lighthouse on Largo Boscovich. Tell us which was closer, and take a picture from the water's edge with both in view.
Somewhere on the palata, on a walk after dinner, my bracelet dropped off.
The palata is the pier of the porto canale, beside the free beach at Piazzale Boscovich, and it is where people come for an evening stroll. On a walkway like this the stretch matters more than anything: close to land, around the middle, or near the tip. Mention anywhere you paused, for instance to watch the fishing boats come in.
Which part of Piazzale Roma should I describe? An earring slipped out during a summer concert there.
Piazzale Roma sits where Viale Ceccarini meets the sea, with the Bosco della Pioggia fountain on it and a free beach in front. Place yourself relative to the fountain, and say if you walked on the sand at any point that evening. A photo of the pair, even one from a shop's website, helps too.
Our car keys disappeared into the sand at the free beach by Piazzale San Martino.
That free beach lies in front of the piazzale, so a search can start from the piazzale and work outwards. Say whether your towels were straight in front of it or farther along, and whether the keys sat in a bag or just lay on the sand. Describe the fob.
I took my Oura ring off to build sandcastles on the free beach at Viale Forlì, and cannot find where I put it.
Begin from where Viale Forlì brought you onto the beach. Was your spot near the water, or farther back from it? Say too if the children dug that patch over afterwards, and give us the ring's colour and size.
We were on the big free beach in Cervia when the wedding band came loose. How do I explain where?
It lies on Lungomare Grazia Deledda between Viale Milazzo and Via Cairoli, with toilets and showers. Say whether Viale Milazzo or Via Cairoli was nearer your towels, and how close you were to the showers. If the sea is a possibility, tell us whether you only paddled or swam.
Is the beach at Marano in Rimini or in Riccione? My chain went missing there.
It can be either. The Rio Marano is the border, with a large free beach on the Rimini side, and on the Riccione side the Lungomare della Costituzione ends at the bridge over it, by the Passeggiata Goethe. Name the bank of the stream you sat on, and say whether the chain broke at the clasp.
It was November, the beach at Marina Centro was almost empty, and my phone is out there somewhere.
The beach in front of the Parco del Mare at Marina Centro stays open in autumn and winter too. Use the Belvedere on Piazzale Kennedy or the Giardini Arpesella as your reference, and mention whether the beach tennis or volleyball courts were close by. Add the make and model.
