Sarasota, Siesta Key, Lido, Venice and Boca Grande
Lost a ring in Sarasota or on Siesta Key?
White quartz sand on Siesta Key and shark tooth shell beds at Venice, with different ground on almost every stretch.
A class ring is heavy, and on these Gulf beaches that cuts both ways. A solid ring gives a detector a clear signal from further off than a thin band does, but soft quartz sand lets that weight settle in fast, and a lost ring keeps going down every time someone walks over the spot.
Ring Seekers is a lost ring and jewelry recovery service that works with experienced local metal detectorists to search for a ring, wedding band, watch or phone lost in Sarasota, on Siesta Key, Lido Key or Longboat Key, in Venice or in Boca Grande. We organise the search, and an experienced local detectorist carries it out. Tell us what happened and where. We choose an experienced detectorist who knows the beach, brief them with your map and photos, and tell you honestly if the odds are poor.
If you looked up metal detecting Florida beaches after a loss, this page sets out the first hour.
What to do first after losing jewelry on the Sarasota and Venice coast
Before you leave, drop a pin where your towel was and where you went into the water, and photograph the nearest lifeguard tower or access number. Do not dig with your hands, because that pushes a ring deeper. Send us the pin, the time and a photo of the item.
Then we choose an experienced detectorist who knows that stretch and hand over everything you sent, so the first sweep starts at your towel.

Beaches from Longboat Key to Boca Grande where jewelry goes missing
Each has its own sand and its own way of swallowing things.
Siesta Beach and Crescent Beach, Siesta Key
Siesta Beach sits on Beach Road, with lifeguard towers, volleyball and a playground. Its sand is 99 percent quartz, brilliant white and cool underfoot. Crescent Beach lies at its south end, with Point of Rocks at the southern tip. On a beach this crowded a ring slips off unnoticed, so pin where you sat and swam.
Turtle Beach, south Siesta Key
Turtle Beach, on Midnight Pass Road, has sand darker and less fine than Siesta Beach's, and people search it for fossil sharks' teeth and shells. It has a boat ramp and a kayak launch, and that coarse, shelly ground is noisier for a detector than the quartz further north.
Lido Beach, North Lido and South Lido
Lido Beach, a few minutes from St. Armands Circle, is the main public beach on Lido Key, with white quartz sand and lifeguard towers to pin a spot against. North Lido is quieter and has none, so there you line up on the access path. At the southern tip, the currents off Ted Sperling Park at South Lido run swift.
Longboat Key and Beer Can Island
Longboat Key has 12 public beach accesses. At its northern tip, Beer Can Island or Greer Island is reached by a short boardwalk off Broadway Street and is known for driftwood and shelling. The driftwood makes it one of the easier beaches here to describe, because no two trunks look alike.
Venice Beach, Brohard Park and the Venice Fishing Pier
Venice Beach, a short walk from downtown, is a shark tooth hunting beach, and the town calls itself the Shark Tooth Capital of the World. Further south, Brohard Park holds the Venice Fishing Pier. People wade to the water's edge, where the waves break over a small drop-off, to sift for teeth, and that is where rings come off. Pin where you stood.
Caspersen Beach, Venice
Caspersen Beach lies on Harbor Drive, known for fossil sharks' teeth and shells, with the southern two thirds left natural. Since the Harbor Drive access washed out, people walk or cycle in from South Brohard Park or the Venetian Waterway Park Trail, so fewer feet cross this sand than the beaches further north.
Boca Grande and Gasparilla Island State Park
Gasparilla Island is reached by a toll causeway, and there are 14 Gulf side beach accesses in Boca Grande. At the southern end, Gasparilla Island State Park holds the 1890 Port Boca Grande Lighthouse, the landmark most people describe their spot from. Boca Grande Pass drops to about 80 feet (about 24 metres) with strong currents.
How a search from Sarasota down to Boca Grande is put together
One person on WhatsApp from start to finish
The same person answers your first message and stays with it, so you never tell the story twice.
The detectorist gets your map and photos
Whoever searches starts from your pin and photos, not the wrong beach access.
Plain about poor odds
A month old loss on a beach walked over every day is a long shot, and you would hear that from us first.
A heavy ring and a thin earring are different jobs
A class ring or a watch reads from further off. A stud or a fine chain gives so little back that a searcher works a narrow patch slowly.
Nothing is arranged before you know the cost
The figure for a search reaches you while you are still deciding, not after someone has driven to the beach.
Tides, sand and water on the Sarasota and Venice coast
What the Gulf and this sand do to something dropped in them.
Quartz sand, shell beds and fossil teeth
Siesta Beach and Lido Beach have fine white quartz sand, and Turtle Beach darker, coarser sand. Around Venice a fossil layer lies 18 to 35 feet (about 5 to 11 metres) deep, and storms and waves drive fossil teeth into the shallows.
A small Gulf tide
NOAA tide datums (1983 to 2001 epoch) give a great diurnal range of 2.03 feet (about 0.6 metres) at Siesta Key, Big Sarasota Pass (station 8726034), 2.2 feet (about 0.7 metres) at Venice (8725858) and 1.56 feet (about 0.5 metres) at Port Boca Grande (8725577). The waterline does not move far.
Warm water most of the year
NOAA coastal water temperature records for Venice show a monthly average of 64.2°F (about 18°C) in January and 87.4°F (about 31°C) in August. Fingers shrink in cooler water, so a ring slips off more easily on a winter swim.
Currents at the passes
The water moves hardest where the islands end. The currents run swift off South Lido, and Boca Grande Pass, which drops to about 80 feet (about 24 metres), has strong tidal currents. Out in a pass is beyond a searcher on foot, though the beach beside it is not.
What the storms left behind
The Harbor Drive access at Caspersen Beach washed out in the 2024 storm season and people now walk or cycle in, which keeps that sand quieter than Siesta or Lido. At Venice the water line is worked over daily by people sifting for teeth, which moves the top few inches constantly.

Questions about Sarasota, Siesta Key, Lido, Venice and Boca Grande
My class ring came off on Siesta Beach. Is it worth a search?
Yes, and a class ring is one of the better targets on this coast. It is heavy and solid, so a detector hears it from further off than a thin band. The catch is the sand. Siesta Beach is 99 percent quartz and very soft, so that weight keeps working down while people walk over the spot. Mark it, keep off it, and send a pin with the hour.
I lost my wedding ring at Lido Beach. What should I send you?
The nearest lifeguard tower first, because on that white quartz sand the towers are the fixed points. Then say how far down towards the water you were, whether it came off on the towel, walking or swimming, and roughly when. A photo looking back inland from your spot places it too.
My Oura ring came off while I was sifting for shark teeth in Venice. Can it be found?
It can be worth a search. A detector picks up an Oura ring like any other metal ring. Pin where you stood, say how deep you were wading and tell us the time. At Caspersen Beach you reach the sand on foot or by bike, so say which way you came in.
I dropped my phone or sunglasses off the Venice Fishing Pier. What now?
It depends where it landed. On the sand beside the pier at Brohard Park a phone is a strong signal and a fair search. Out past standing depth it becomes a diver's job rather than a detector one. Plastic sunglasses give no signal at all.
I lost a bracelet at Beer Can Island on Longboat Key. How do I place it?
By the way you got there. Beer Can Island, or Greer Island, sits at the northern tip of Longboat Key and is reached by a short boardwalk off Broadway Street, so the boardwalk end is one landmark and the driftwood the other. If you were further south, name which of the 12 public accesses you used.
Can someone search for a ring lost at Boca Grande?
Yes. Boca Grande has 14 Gulf side beach accesses, and the 1890 Port Boca Grande Lighthouse at the southern end is the landmark everything lines up against. Tell us which access you parked at and how far you walked. The tide here moves about 1.56 feet (about 0.5 metres), so the spot you mark today is near enough the spot tomorrow.
I lost an earring or bracelet at Turtle Beach or Crescent Beach on Siesta Key. Does the sand matter?
It helps to know which sand you were on. Crescent Beach, at the south end of Siesta Beach, has the same soft white quartz. Turtle Beach, further south, has darker, coarser sand mixed with tiny shells, which is noisier ground for a detector. A small gold earring gives a weak signal either way, so an exact pin matters most.
It happened last month and I have flown home. Is it too late?
Not always. Gold and platinum sit in soft sand for a long time, and with a tide that moves barely two feet here the sand is not turned over the way an open ocean beach is. Storms and other searchers lower the odds as weeks pass. Send the date, the beach and a pin for an honest answer.

The tower you were nearest, and how far down the sand
Those two, the hour, and a photo of what you lost.
On a beach this long the tower or access number does more than the name of the key. Send it on WhatsApp and we will tell you plainly what this sand is likely to give back.
