You can be at home, in another state or in another country when you write to us on WhatsApp. Our first questions are general ones: what the item is, which town, park, beach or lake it was, the day, and whether you were on grass, sand, snow or in water.
If it sounds searchable and you want to go ahead, we then ask for a map screenshot with the spot marked, your photos from the day and a photo of the item, or of its twin if it was one of a pair. The last trip photo with the watch on your wrist and the first one without it narrow both the place and the time.

Parks in the Las Vegas valley
Sunset Park, near the Las Vegas airport, covers 324 acres (about 131 hectares), with seven sand volleyball courts and a fishing pond. Wetlands Park has a loop trail 14 miles (about 22 km) long. Lake Mead and Red Rock Canyon
Lake Mead National Recreation Area begins just outside Boulder City. Boulder Beach stretches more than a mile (1.6 km) along the Boulder Basin, and on Lake Mohave, about an hour south of Las Vegas, you can walk straight into the water at Cottonwood Cove Beach. Red Rock Canyon, 17 miles (27 km) west of the Strip, has a 13-mile (21 km) one-way scenic drive past sandstone canyons, with trailheads and picnic areas along it.
Lake Tahoe's Nevada shore, Reno and Sparks
Lake Tahoe is clear enough that a white disk lowered into it by UC Davis stayed visible to about 69 feet (21 metres) on average in 2025. On the Nevada side, Sand Harbor has gently sloping beaches, and Zephyr Cove rents out boats, kayaks and jet skis. In downtown Reno the Truckee River Whitewater Park at Wingfield runs around a grassy park, and there are two beaches at Sparks Marina Park. The California shore is included on Lake Tahoe and Reno.
Washoe Lake and three state park reservoirs
Washoe Lake State Park is situated between Reno and Carson City. Its largest day use area has lawns and sandy beach areas, there is a South Beach too, sand dunes lie by the disc golf course, and the park is used for camping, picnicking, water sports and horse riding. Lahontan Reservoir has 69 miles (111 km) of shoreline, and primitive camping there is on the beach itself. Rye Patch State Recreation Area is on a reservoir 22 miles (35 km) long with 72 miles (116 km) of shoreline, in a trench cut by the Humboldt River, and visitors go there to camp, picnic, swim and water-ski. South Fork State Recreation Area has boating, swimming, fishing and camping.
Laughlin's river shore, Mesquite and the Ruby Mountains
Big Bend of the Colorado State Recreation Area is on the Colorado River at Nevada's southern tip, and Laughlin is the nearby town. The park has about two miles (3.2 km) of sandy shoreline, and camping, picnicking, boating, fishing and swimming are all popular there. We take enquiries from Mesquite too. For a loss there, name the park, the golf course or the street. Lamoille Canyon, in the Ruby Mountains, is roughly 22 miles (35 km) from Elko, the town's visitor site says. Its paved byway passes camping sites, fishing spots and picnic grounds. Great Basin National Park, by the town of Baker, climbs to Wheeler Peak at 13,063 feet (3,982 metres), with Lehman Caves and alpine lakes such as Teresa Lake on its trails.

Water, shoreline and snow on the day you lost it
Cold water at Tahoe and below Davis Dam
Even in summer the surface of Lake Tahoe averages only 68 F (20 C), and in winter 41 F (5 C), on EPA figures. At Big Bend the Colorado is clear and cool all year because the park is downstream from Davis Dam, Nevada State Parks says. Say how deep the water was where you stood.
Where the water's edge was
Rye Patch has 11,000 acres (about 4,450 hectares) of water surface when full, on the state park's own figure. For a loss at a reservoir, tell us where the water's edge was on the day and how far from it you were.
Winter in Lee Canyon and the Ruby Mountains
Lee Canyon, in the Mount Charleston area, has designated snow play areas in winter, and Lamoille Canyon outside Elko turns to Nordic skiing, heli-skiing and snowmobiling. Cell service is limited up at Lee Canyon. If you could not save a pin there, send any photo from the day that shows the slope and something fixed beside it.
Nevada questions, answered for someone who has already left
My watch came off on the sandy shore at Big Bend of the Colorado and we fly back to Canada in two days. Can anything still happen once we have gone?
Yes. Nobody needs you on the riverbank for a search. The park has about two miles (3.2 km) of sandy shoreline, so note which stretch you used and whether you were on dry sand or in the river. The rest runs over WhatsApp.
I am back in the UK and my wedding band is gone. I last had it at our camp on the beach at Lahontan. How would you search without me?
From your photos and a map you mark for us. Lahontan has 69 miles (111 km) of shoreline, so the camp has to be pinned down: which beach area, how far the tent stood from the water, where the car was.
My sister's ring came off in the sand at the main day use area at Washoe Lake, and we are in Carson City until Sunday. I looked up metal detector rental near me and found a shop. Worth a try?
It can be, if the sand was dry and you can point to the spot within a few steps. A rented detector suits that sort of loss, or one on a lawn. Wet sand, water, a wide area or something as small as an earring is a job for a detectorist.
My son lost his class ring fishing from the bank at Rye Patch. We live in Oregon and know nothing about metal detecting in Nevada. Who actually goes out and looks?
A metal detectorist, found and briefed by us, so you do not need to know anyone there. Rye Patch has one campground beside the boat ramp on the reservoir's west side and another on the river below the dam, so tell us which he was nearer to.
Our rental car's key fob went into the Truckee while we were tubing through the whitewater park in Reno, and we are home now. Any chance?
Some, if you know which pool it went into. The park has 11 drop pools in two channels, so name the channel and the pool. If all you know is that it went in somewhere along the run, the search is far harder, and we would say so.
We drove on to Utah yesterday, and my iPhone is still somewhere on a golf course in Mesquite with a dead battery. Is there anything to try from this distance?
Yes. Apple's support pages say Find My can show a device's last known location for up to seven days, so check it from another device today and screenshot what it shows. Ask the course whether a phone was handed in. Then send us the screenshot and the hole you think you were on.
Roughly how soon after my message would someone be out at the spot in Nevada?
We do not name a day in advance, and we would sooner say so than guess. First we look for a detectorist who can reach that part of the state, then a date is agreed with them. You hear from us after the search, whatever came of it.
