Sand or surf? Where your wedding band went on Indiana's lakeshore shapes the search
Michigan City, the state park at Chesterton, Gary, Whiting, South Bend, Granger and Bristol
The dunes behind the state park beach at Chesterton tower nearly 200 feet (about 60 metres) above Lake Michigan, the Indiana DNR says, and Indiana Dunes Tourism counts 15 miles (about 24 km) of shoreline in the area. That is a great deal of sand for one lost wedding band, so we begin small. Did it fall on dry sand, on wet sand or in the waves?

Two landmarks, a photo and the right time zone
Washington Park in Michigan City has a colour-coded path system for finding your way along the beach, so write down the colour of the path you came down. Add a second fixed point, the lighthouse or the end of the pier. Photograph both from where you stand and drop a pin before you move. The city lists lifeguards on duty from late May to early September, so tell them too.
Note the time, and the time zone with it. The Indiana DNR puts Indiana Dunes State Park on Central Time, while its page for Potato Creek, near South Bend, gives Eastern. So 3 pm is two different moments at the two ends of this page.

Whihala Beach, with Chicago across the water
From the sand at Whihala Beach in Whiting you can see the Chicago skyline. The South Shore visitors authority gives the beach more than 20 acres (about 8 hectares), a boardwalk and a fishing pier. WhoaZone, a one-acre (0.4 hectare) floating park of slides, towers and jumping platforms, is on the water here. A bracelet might come off on a jump.
Marquette Park, Gary's lakefront in Miller Beach
Gary's 241-acre (about 98 hectare) lakefront park has Indiana Dunes National Park on every side of it, the city says. The Marquette Park Pavilion hosts events of up to 350 people. The Miller Beach Tourism Bureau mentions a kayak launch on the Calumet Lagoon. Tell us exactly where you were: outside the Pavilion, by the lagoon or on the sand.
Three miles of state park beach at Chesterton
Indiana Dunes State Park is a separate park from the national park. The Indiana DNR gives it 2,182 acres (883 hectares) and more than three miles (about 5 km) of beach. It has a guarded swimming beach in summer, the restored Dunes Pavilion and a campground of 140 electric sites. Tell us which of the three you were nearest.
The national park beaches, West Beach to Mount Baldy
Indiana Dunes National Park has its own string of beaches. West Beach, the only one with lifeguards, has a bathhouse and the Dune Succession Trail. Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk has a pavilion and a breakwater people fish from. Farther east come Porter, Kemil, Dunbar, Lake View and Central beaches, then Mount Baldy at the Michigan City end. Give us the beach and the parking lot you used.
Washington Park, under the Michigan City lighthouse
Ninety-nine acres (40 hectares) on the lake, by the parks department's count, with a pier, sand dunes, a zoo and a historic bandstand where people get married. The visitor bureau adds sand volleyball tournaments, wooden walkways and the 1904 East Light, which it calls Indiana's only working lighthouse. Over the side of the pier is a much harder case than the beach next to it, so tell us which.
South Bend's riverfront and the two lakes at Notre Dame
Howard Park has the St. Joseph River on its western edge, with a trail beside it, and Visit South Bend Mishawaka says skating on its ice trail and pond begins the day after Thanksgiving. At Notre Dame, St. Mary's Lake and St. Joseph's Lake lie at the northwest edge of campus, each with a trail around it. A glove pulled off at the ice trail might be when a ring goes.
Granger, Bristol and the water inland
Harris Township Park, on Elm Road in Granger, has a playground, pickleball courts, a baseball diamond and a cricket pitch, though here it may just as well be a back yard. St. Patrick's County Park, on Laurel Road, has wooded trails, ponds and St. Joseph River frontage. Potato Creek State Park, about 12 miles (19 km) southwest of South Bend, has a beach on Worster Lake. In Bristol, the county park around Bonneyville Mill has picnic tables, a playground and fishing.

The lighthouse in your photo is a bearing
Photograph the pier, the lighthouse or the Pavilion from where you stood. The detectorist gets that picture with your pin and can walk to the same view.
Waist deep is not the towel line
A band that dropped by your towel beside a wooden walkway has a dry, marked place to start from. One that came off waist deep in breaking waves does not. You get our view of the odds in the first conversation.

Before a search here, the sand, the wind and the snow get a say
Dry sand above the waterline, wet sand below it
Large dunes lie behind the whole state park shoreline, by the DNR's account. Loose sand can close over a band with one footstep, so mark first and dig second. Thinking about a metal detector rental? It can suit a fresh loss on dry sand or a lawn. For wet sand, the water, a large area or a small item, a detectorist makes more sense.
Measure from the pier, not from the water
NOAA measures the biggest Great Lakes tide at less than 2 inches (5 cm). Weather shifts the water instead, and a seiche, an oscillating wave, can stand several feet (a metre or so) high. The waterline in your photo may not be the waterline on the day of a search, so give distances from something that stays put.
Snow off the lake, November to March
South Bend gets about 65 inches (about 165 cm) of snow in a typical year, according to the National Weather Service, most of it from November through March. If snow has fallen since the loss, tell us.
Pier, pavilion, lake path and lawn, one answer each
My husband's wedding band slid off waist deep at Washington Park in Michigan City. He wants to go back in with a mask. Good idea?
Only in calm water, and mark the spot from the shore first. Ask him what he could see ahead and to each side, the lighthouse, the pier or a walkway, and how deep he stood. Send us that with a pin at the water's edge.
My glasses, metal frames, vanished from our spot on the sand near the Dunes Pavilion at Indiana Dunes State Park. You, or lost property?
Lost property first, then us. Ask the park staff whether a pair was handed in. If not, we take metal-framed glasses as well as rings. Tell us where your things were in relation to the Pavilion.
A gold bracelet came off my wrist on a WhoaZone jumping platform at Whihala Beach. Is it even worth writing to you?
Yes, and expect a frank reply. Open water under a floating platform is much harder to search than the sand or the boardwalk. Tell us which part of the course you were on, and ask the WhoaZone staff whether it was handed in.
I lost an earring outside the Marquette Park Pavilion in Gary at a wedding. There is another event there next weekend. Does that matter?
It can. More feet over the same ground may press a small thing in or move it, so sooner is better. Tell us where you stood for the photos or which door you used, and send a picture of the matching earring beside a coin.
My mother's hearing aid dropped out somewhere on our walk round St. Mary's Lake at Notre Dame. She noticed an hour later. Hopeless?
Hard, not hopeless. It depends on how far you can narrow the walk. Each of the two campus lakes has its own trail, so tell us which lake, which way round you went and where you stopped to sit.
I lost my ring doing yard work in Granger and it snowed that night. Do we wait for spring?
No, write to us now. The National Weather Service puts South Bend's main snow season at November through March, and that is a long time to hold a memory. Sketch the yard and mark where you raked or planted.
A thin gold necklace broke at Bonneyville Mill County Park in Bristol. We found the pendant by the picnic tables but not the chain. Any chance?
Some, and we would rather be plain: a fine chain is one of the harder things to look for. A small, well-marked area helps most. Where the pendant lay is your best clue, so pin it, and tell us how you walked between the tables and the playground.
