A ring lost on Kos can often be found if you can put the spot to within a few metres and someone gets there before the sand has been tidied and walked over for days. What decides it is how well you mark the place, and whether it went into dry sand, shingle or the sea.

How a search on Kos works, from Lambi to Kefalos Bay
In the first hour, fix the spot. Line yourself up with two things that do not move, such as a beach bar and a shower post at Lambi or a hotel entrance and a sunbed row at Kardamena. Photograph both directions, drop a pin, note the time and whether you were on dry sand or in the water, then send it to us on WhatsApp with a photo of the ring, watch or phone.
We find a detectorist who can reach Kos and brief them with your marked map, the time and your photos. The north coast at Marmari and Mastichari is windy, Kardamena is usually calm, and Psalidi is mostly shingle where Tigaki is sand, so name the beach as well as the resort.

Kos Town, Lambi and Psalidi
Kos Town has sandy and shingle beaches all the way from Kritika to the marina. Lambi, about 3 kilometres from the centre, is thick sand with deep water close in over smooth rock. Psalidi, about 4 kilometres east, is mostly shingle, with the island's main water sports centres. Just behind it lies the Psalidi wetland, a marsh fed by two streams, with paths that birdwatchers follow to the water. A lost wedding ring that slid off at a sunbed stays near the surface.
Tigaki and Marmari
Tigaki, 11 kilometres from Kos Town, is a long sandy beach with shallow, clear water, popular with families. Marmari, about 14 kilometres out, is silky sand and shallow water, a kitesurfing beach. Endangered sea turtles nest on the Marmari sand. Between the two villages lies Alykes, the Tigaki salt lake, easy to reach on foot or by bike, which dries to a white crust of salt in summer and draws flamingos in spring and autumn. A ring lost on the lake shore or on the walk out to it is searched just like one lost on the beach.
Mastichari
Mastichari, 22 kilometres from Kos Town, has a harbour with boats to Kalymnos, fine sand with some gravel and shells, and among the windiest spots on the island. An afternoon chop here shifts sand over a watch or Oura ring lost in the shallows, so the sooner someone sweeps the better.
Kardamena
Kardamena, 30 kilometres from Kos Town and 6 from the airport, is the island's liveliest resort, with 6 kilometres of mostly sandy coastline and calm water that deepens quickly in places. The beach in front of the town has sunbeds, water sports and a line of bars. Rings come off at the sunbeds and in the first metres of water, bracelets and earrings on the sand after a night out.
Kefalos Bay, Kamari to Agios Stefanos
Kefalos is a hilltop village in the far south west, with the seaside strip of Kamari and its harbour below. Kamari beach is a long strip of sand either side of the harbour, and its water is deep and among the coldest on Kos, the kind that takes a wedding ring off a shrunk finger. Paradise Beach is sand with very shallow water. Agios Stefanos is sand and shallow, clear water facing the Kastri islet. A ring lost in the shallows at either is a fair case. One lost snorkelling off the rocks at Kastri needs someone in the water.

We know how this sand and wind behave
There is almost no tide on Kos, so a ring lost at knee depth at Tigaki or Kardamena stays close to where it went in. On the shingle at Psalidi a ring sinks between the stones. That tells the detectorist where to start.

What decides a search on this island.
Tides
The Mediterranean is nearly tideless, a few tens of centimetres at most, so there is no low water to wait for. A ring lost in the shallows at Tigaki or Kardamena stays close to where it went in unless wind, a swell or the feet of many swimmers move it.
Sand, shingle and rock
The north coast at Tigaki, Marmari and Mastichari, the 6 kilometres of Kardamena and the Kefalos Bay beaches are sand, the easiest ground on the island for a detector. Kos Town is mixed. Lambi is thick sand with gravel and pebbles over smooth rock, Psalidi is mostly shingle and Therma is dark volcanic pebbles around a hot spring. On shingle a ring sinks between the stones, and over rock the search moves to a diver. Sunbeds go out again every morning and the sand is walked over all day, so a search is planned for early morning.
Wind and water temperature
Mastichari is among the places with the highest wind probability on Kos and Marmari is a kitesurfing beach, so an afternoon chop on the north coast moves anything lost in the shallows and fills sand over it. Kardamena on the south coast is usually calm and flat. Kamari in Kefalos Bay is among the coldest water on the island.

I lost my wedding ring at Lambi in Kos Town. What should I do first?
Line yourself up with two things that will still be there tomorrow, such as a beach bar sign and a shower post, photograph both directions and drop a pin. Lambi is thick sand with a little gravel and pebbles, and just off it the water is deep over smooth rock. A ring dropped on dry sand at the sunbeds is a fair case. One that came off in the water is lying on rock, which is harder, so tell us which it was and send a photo of the ring.
My Oura ring or watch came off in the sea at Tigaki or Marmari. Is a search worth it?
Often, yes. A lost Oura ring and most watches contain enough metal to show on a detector, and both beaches are sand with shallow water and almost no tide, so an item lost at knee depth usually stays near where it went in. The catch is wind. Marmari is a kitesurfing beach, and an afternoon chop shifts sand over a small item quickly, so the sooner the spot is swept the better. Tell us whose sunbeds you used and how far out you were.
I lost a ring in Kardamena, on the beach or on a night out. Can it be found?
On the beach, it is worth trying. Kardamena has 6 kilometres of mostly sandy coastline with water that is usually calm and flat, though it deepens quickly in places, and a ring lost at a sunbed or in the first few metres of water is the kind of loss a detector is good at. A ring lost in the bars is found by retracing your steps and asking each bar the next morning.
I lost a bracelet or an earring at Paradise Beach in Kefalos Bay. Can a detectorist find it?
A bracelet is a fair case. Paradise Beach is sand with water so shallow that you walk about 40 metres out before it reaches half a metre deep, so anything dropped while wading is lying in sand within reach. A stud earring gives a weak signal, so we need the sunbed row as exactly as you can give it and a photo of the matching earring. The beach is packed with families every day of the season, so a search is planned for early morning.
My ring came off swimming at Agios Stefanos or out at the Kastri islet. What are the chances?
Agios Stefanos beach is sand with shallow, clear water, and a ring that slipped off in the shallows there is a reasonable search. People snorkel around the rocks of the Kastri islet, and a ring lost there has usually gone into a gap between stones in deeper water, a job for someone in the water searching by eye.
What if the ring cannot be found?
Some are not found. If the spot is vague or the ring went into deep water off a jet ski or a harbour wall, we tell you before anyone travels. We explain the costs before any search is booked.
