Santa Barbara and Carpinteria
Lost a wedding ring in Santa Barbara?
From Arroyo Burro to Rincon Point, groomed dry sand, a gentle swell and one serious surf break
A wedding ring dropped on the dry sand at East Beach is usually still close to where it fell, and the whole job is placing that spot. East Beach runs from Stearns Wharf to the city limits past the Clark Estate, a long way to search on a guess. Parts of it are groomed above the kelp line, so if you saw a rake go past, say so.
Ring Seekers is a lost ring and jewelry recovery service that works with experienced local metal detectorists to search for a ring, wedding band, watch or phone lost in Santa Barbara or Carpinteria.
We choose and brief the detectorist, and stay with you until the search is done. Tell us what happened and where. We choose an experienced detectorist who knows the beach, brief them with your map and photos, and tell you honestly if the odds are poor.
Photograph the spot with something solid in frame
Go back to where it happened and look for a fixed marker, such as Stearns Wharf, a lifeguard tower, the Boathouse Restaurant at Arroyo Burro or a campground loop at Carpinteria State Beach. Photograph the spot with that marker showing and save a pin in your map app. Do not scrape around in the sand with your hands, because that only spreads things out.
Then message us on WhatsApp saying which beach, roughly where on it, and when you realised it was gone. Say whether it went down on dry sand, on a lawn, in the shallows or off the wharf, because those are four different searches.

Beaches from Arroyo Burro to Rincon Point
Each beach behaves differently, which changes what a searcher can do.
East Beach, Santa Barbara
East Beach runs from Stearns Wharf to the city limits past the Clark Estate, at the eastern end of four miles of city beach parks. It has more than a dozen volleyball courts, picnic areas, a playground and the Cabrillo Pavilion, all things you can name in a photograph. The harbour is dredged yearly and the sand deposited down shore here.
Stearns Wharf and West Beach
Stearns Wharf is California's oldest working wharf, dating from 1872, with restaurants, the Sea Center and a bait and tackle shop. Anything dropped over the rail lands in the sea. West Beach, 7.44 acres of sand between the wharf and the harbour, is used for swimming, kayaking and volleyball and holds the city's Fourth of July celebration.
Leadbetter Beach and Shoreline Park
Leadbetter lies between the harbour and Shoreline Park, across from Santa Barbara City College, with a grassy lawn, picnic sites and outdoor showers, and is popular with beginners on surfboards and windsurfers. Shoreline Park above it is 14.67 acres of lawn and playground with a stairway down. The bluff backed beaches west of it are not groomed.
Arroyo Burro Beach (Hendry's Beach)
Arroyo Burro, which locals call Hendry's Beach, has mild surf, bodyboarding and paddleboarding, with a grassy picnic area and the Boathouse Restaurant behind the sand. The restaurant and the creek give two lines that cross, so a loss here is easier to place than one on an open strand.
Carpinteria City Beach and Carpinteria State Beach
Carpinteria City Beach is known as the world's safest beach, a name put down to the surf breaking far out with no undertow. Carpinteria State Beach beside it has about a mile of fine grained sand on a gentle slope, used for swimming, surfing and surf fishing. Each winter a sand berm is built between Linden and Ash avenues and taken down in spring, which moves a great deal of sand.
Tar Pits Beach, the tide pools and the seal rookery
At the southeastern end of Carpinteria State Beach, near the San Miguel Campground loop, a rocky formation holds tide pools at low tide, and natural tar seeps onto the bluffs and the sand. Both slow a search down. On the bluffs above, the harbour seals are watched from the bluff top, reached by the Coastal Vista Trail.
Rincon Beach Park and Rincon Point
Rincon sits at the Santa Barbara and Ventura county line, off Highway 101 at Bates Road. Rincon Beach Park has parking, picnic tables and restrooms above the beach, and a trail down to Rincon Point, one of the best known surf spots in California. A ring in the surf here is much harder than one on the dry sand above it.
How a search here is put together
One person on WhatsApp
From the first message to the end of the search you deal with the same person.
Your map and photos go to the detectorist
Whoever searches has your pin, your photos and your chosen marker before setting foot on the sand.
Weak cases are said out loud
A ring in the Rincon Point surf after a winter swell is a weak case, and you hear that before anything is arranged.
Groomed sand, lawns and surf are different jobs
Raked dry sand at East Beach, the lawn at Shoreline Park and the water off Leadbetter need different plans, and we tell you which is yours.
You are never asked to commit first
The figure for a search reaches you plainly, and arranging one only starts after you have said yes to it.
Tide, sand and water from Arroyo Burro to Rincon
The facts a detectorist works with on this stretch of coast.
Tides at Santa Barbara
The NOAA tide station at Santa Barbara (9411340) gives a mean tide range of 1.12 metres (3.66 feet) and a great diurnal range of 1.64 metres (5.39 feet). Wet sand and shallow water are searched around the lower of the two daily low tides, which is also when the Carpinteria tide pools show.
Sand, grooming and the winter berm
Parts of Leadbetter, West and East beaches are groomed all year, only on the dry sand above the kelp line, and large swells and high tides can push kelp far up the beach. In Carpinteria a winter sand berm goes up between Linden and Ash avenues and comes down in spring. Moved sand buries a ring deeper.
Surf and water temperature
Carpinteria State Beach has gentle swells and a shallow slope, Arroyo Burro is known for mild surf, and Rincon Point is a serious surf break. Satellite averages for Santa Barbara put the sea at about 12.9 C (55 F) in April and about 16.6 C (62 F) in August. In cold water fingers shrink and a ring slides off without you feeling it.
Tar, rock and the tide pools
Not all of this coast is clean sand. At the southeastern end of Carpinteria State Beach, near the San Miguel Campground loop, a rocky formation holds tide pools at low tide and natural tar seeps onto the bluffs and the sand. Both slow a search down, so at that end the campground loop or the path you used is the detail that matters most.

Questions about Santa Barbara and Carpinteria
I lost my wedding ring by the East Beach volleyball courts. Where do I start?
Stand where you were and photograph the spot with a fixed marker in frame, such as a volleyball court, the Cabrillo Pavilion or Stearns Wharf behind you. East Beach runs from the wharf to the city limits past the Clark Estate, so a rough pin is not enough. Say whether you were on dry sand or near the water, and whether you saw a rake go past.
I dropped my phone or sunglasses off Stearns Wharf. Is it worth trying?
It can be, for the phone. Note which side of the wharf you were on and how far along, say level with the bait and tackle shop or the Sea Center. A phone is metal and can be found with a water detector if depth, swell and visibility allow. Plastic sunglasses give no signal, so those are found by eye or by a diver.
My Oura ring came off learning to surf at Leadbetter. Can a detector find it?
Yes, an Oura ring has a metal shell, so a detector picks it up much like a wedding band. Leadbetter sits between the harbour and Shoreline Park. Tell us how far out you were and whether you were nearer the harbour or the Shoreline Park end. Shallow water is searched around the lower of the two daily low tides.
I lost my watch at Arroyo Burro Beach (Hendry's). What now?
Place yourself against the Boathouse Restaurant and the creek. Arroyo Burro, which locals call Hendry's, has mild surf and a grassy picnic area behind the sand. A watch has plenty of metal in it and reads clearly, so the question is only how much ground to cover. Say whether you were on the grass, the dry sand or near the creek mouth.
I lost a bracelet near the tide pools at Carpinteria State Beach. What now?
Tell us which campground loop or path you came from, and the time. The tide pools are at the southeastern end of the park near the San Miguel Campground loop, where a rocky formation shows at low tide. Rocks and tar seeps at that end make a search slower than on open sand, so the tighter the spot the better.
I lost a ring at West Beach in the Fourth of July crowd. Any hope?
On dry sand, a fair amount. West Beach is 7.44 acres between Stearns Wharf and the harbour, used for swimming, kayaking and volleyball, and it holds the city's Fourth of July celebration, so it is a small, well bounded patch by the standards of this coast. Say whether you were nearer the wharf or the harbour and how far up from the water.
My ring went into the surf at Rincon Point. Is there any point trying?
It is the hardest spot on this page, and it still gets an honest look. Rincon Point sits at the Santa Barbara and Ventura county line off Highway 101 at Bates Road and is one of the best known surf breaks in California, so a ring out there after a winter swell is a long shot, and you would hear that from us first. On the dry sand, or up at Rincon Beach Park, it is a far better case.

Which beach, and what was standing behind you
The beach, the marker in your photo, and the hour it happened.
Sand here gets moved twice over, once by the tide and once by the machines, so take the photo and the pin before you walk back to the car. Send both on WhatsApp with the beach and the hour for an honest read back.
