Lost a ring or watch in Belize?
A day in Belize often includes a boat: a water taxi to the cayes, a snorkel trip out to the reef or a cruise tender into Belize City.
Something dropped in Belize can often still be looked for, whether it is a phone off a pier, a ring in the shallows or a watch that came off on a snorkel trip. What settles it is the kind of place, sand at San Pedro or Placencia, the water below a dock or seawall, or a boat stop out on the reef, and after that how close to the spot your map pin lands.
Ring Seekers is a lost ring and jewelry recovery service that works with experienced local metal detectorists to search for a ring, wedding band, watch, keys or phone lost in Belize. Tell us what happened and where. We choose an experienced detectorist who knows the caye or beach, brief them with your map and photos, and tell you honestly if the odds are poor.
Inside the barrier reef, and along the mainland shore
The barrier reef runs along the coast of Belize and shelters the water behind it from the ocean swell. Ambergris Caye, the largest island, lies next to it, and on Caye Caulker the reef runs parallel to the whole caye. Where the reef opens at the Hol Chan cut, boats stop for snorkeling, and the Silk Cayes off Placencia sit right on its outer fringe.
The mainland is different ground. Placencia is a peninsula in the southeast, docks reach out into the sea at Hopkins, and Corozal Bay in the north has a seawall but hardly any sand. Water taxis are the main link between the islands and the mainland, so a dock or a boat is often part of the story.
Before anyone steps onto a caye
Your chat, one person
Whoever answers your first WhatsApp message is still the one you are talking to when the search is over.
Briefed from what you send
The detectorist reads your notes and looks at your map pin and photos before the search, so they begin where you were.
Honest about a bad spot
If what you describe leaves little chance, we say so before anything is arranged.
Questions we will ask
Which caye or town, which beach, pier or boat stop, and the last moment you are sure you had it.
Costs come up early
We explain the costs before any search is booked.
Cayes, a peninsula, a village and a port
The cards run from the northern cayes down to Hopkins, then back up the coast to Belize City and Corozal, and the last card is the full list.
Beaches, piers and boat stops, north to south
San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye
San Pedro is the only town on Ambergris Caye, and water taxis run to it from Belize City. The beach has white sand and palm trees, and golf carts hum up and down the island, so tell us where you stayed and where you swam.
Secret Beach, Ambergris Caye
Secret Beach, out of town on Ambergris Caye, has clear water, warm sand and bars along the shore. Seating is built out over the water, including floating palapas, and wading out to it is when a bracelet or watch can slip away unnoticed.
Hol Chan, Shark Ray Alley and Mexico Rocks
Hol Chan is a natural break in the barrier reef off Ambergris Caye, and the reserve around it takes in coral reef, sea-grass beds and mangroves. Shark Ray Alley, just south of the cut, is where snorkelers swim beside the sharks and rays. Mexico Rocks is a slightly flat coral area that suits beginner snorkelers. All three are boat stops, so name the stop.
The Split and the village, Caye Caulker
Caye Caulker is free of cars, and people get around on foot or by bicycle. The Split is the swimming spot where the island splits in two, with a seawall, a big staircase for jumping into the water and a beach laid out for lounging. Along the beach side of the village many piers are open to the public, so the one you stood on is worth naming.
Placencia village and beach
Placencia is a peninsula on the southeast coast with a traditional Kriol fishing village and a beach dotted with hammocks and palms. The Sidewalk, lined with artisans selling crafts, runs through the village, so say whether you were on the beach or up in the village.
Silk Cayes, out from Placencia
The Silk Cayes are three islands on the outer fringe of the barrier reef, inside the Silk Cayes Marine Reserve. Visitors from Placencia go out for the clear water, sandy beaches and snorkeling over coral gardens, so say which of the three islands you landed on and whether you were on the sand or over the coral.
Hopkins and Hopkins Beach
Hopkins is a Garifuna village on the southeast coast, and Hopkins Beach is where people go for a day on the sand. Docks stretch out from the shore in front of the places to stay along the beach.
Belize City, the tender port and Goff's Caye
Cruise ships anchor off Belize City and bring passengers in by tender to the port. Goff's Caye, a sand island with a white beach and a coral reef, is a major stop for cruise ships and local visitors, and currents and wind keep changing its outline.
Corozal Bay
In northern Belize, Corozal Bay is barely a beach at all, since it lacks sand. Green waves wash over the seawall, and fishing boats are tied up near the shore.

Moving from your message to a search on the caye
Most of it happens in one WhatsApp chat, started from wherever you are when you notice the loss.
The caye, beach or dock first
Say where in Belize it happened, what the item is and what you were doing, whether swimming, standing on a pier or climbing back into a boat.
Where it went, on a map
A pin dropped on the map where it happened narrows things most. Add any photos from that day at the spot, and a picture of the item itself.
Matching someone to the place
The next job is ours, finding a detectorist who can get out to that caye or stretch of shore and turning your pin, photos and notes into their brief.
The search, and what came of it
Once you give the go-ahead, the detectorist searches the spot, and their report reaches you in the same WhatsApp chat, whether or not the item turned up.
Questions about Belize
My ring came off at the Split on Caye Caulker. Should I say how I went into the water?
Please do, since it is the first thing we ask. The Split has a seawall, a big staircase into the water and a beach set up for swimming, so tell us whether it was off the stairs, over the wall or from the sand.
Which details help after a phone drops off a public pier on Caye Caulker?
First, which pier. Many along the beach side of the village are public, so a photo of yours from the sand tells it apart. Then say how far out you were standing.
Where on Secret Beach, Ambergris Caye, would a lost watch be looked for?
Around the part you spent the day on. With bars along the sand and seating out over the water, the spot nearest your table is the best marker, and whether you waded matters too.
Is a wedding band lost snorkeling at Hol Chan or Shark Ray Alley worth reporting?
Yes, though out on the reef it is a long shot, and you would hear that from us first. Hol Chan is a break in the barrier reef, and Shark Ray Alley lies just south of it. Say which stop it was, whether you were over coral or sea grass, and what you remember about where the boat was moored.
The Placencia Peninsula has miles of sand. How do we narrow down where a bracelet went?
The peninsula has 16 miles of sea and sand, so the stretch you were on counts for more than the name. Tell us what was near your hammock or towel, and whether you came down to the beach from the Sidewalk in the village.
Wire-framed sunglasses went missing on Goff's Caye during a cruise stop. Where would a search start?
With whatever pictures you have of the spot. Currents and wind keep reshaping the edges of the island, so pictures of where you sat and swam place you better than a description. Say too whether you snorkeled.
A ring went off one of the Hopkins docks. How is that different from losing it on the beach?
The ground is water rather than sand. Name the dock, as there is more than one stretching out from the shore, and say how far along it you had walked and which side you sat on.
How would keys that dropped over the Corozal Bay seawall be found?
Corozal Bay has hardly any sand, so the search is in the water at the foot of the wall. The seaside there has gazebos and fishing boats docked near the shore, so pin the stretch and say which of them was closest.
