Note which field it was and where you spent your time on it: a base, a spot on the touchline, a blanket under a tree. A ring could come away with a batting glove or while you dried your hands, so put the bench and the cooler on your list as well.
Next, tie that spot to things that stay put: a base, a goalpost, the backstop, a light pole. Pace out the distance from two of them and take one wide photo with both in it. When you look, go in daylight, slowly, parting the grass with your fingers and leaving the rake at home. If another team is due on the field, ask them to keep bags and chairs off that corner.

Kansas parks, sports complexes and reservoirs, described one by one
Overland Park and the Kansas side of the Kansas City metro
Shawnee Mission Park is 1,756 acres (about 710 hectares) round a lake with a swimming beach and a marina, plus picnic shelters and an off-leash area for dogs. Name the part of the park you were in. The Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens has hiking trails and hosts weddings. Yards and the Missouri side of the metro are on Kansas City, Missouri and Kansas.
Riverside Park and Sedgwick County Park in Wichita
Central Riverside Park, near downtown Wichita, has a half-mile (0.8 km) oval walking path, a playground with a sand surface and interactive fountains at Celebration Plaza. Sedgwick County Park has a fishing pond and a Boundless Playground, and it hosts the Great Plains Renaissance and Scottish Festival.
Cheney and El Dorado state parks
Cheney State Park is 16 miles (26 km) west of Wichita, on a lake whose dependable wind draws sailors and windsurfers. The Ninnescah Sailing Center is on the West Shore and the marina is on the East Shore. Tell us which shore. El Dorado State Park lies on the western edge of the Flint Hills, along both the eastern and the western shore of El Dorado Lake. It has an amphitheatre with a stage for concerts. Deeper in the Flint Hills, Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve sits two miles (3 km) north of Strong City on Highway 177, with 40 miles (64 km) of trails marked by numbered limestone posts, so the nearest marker number places a loss.
Lake Shawnee and its two sports complexes
Lake Shawnee is a Shawnee County park used for festivals and ball tournaments. Round the lake are the Lake Shawnee Trail, Ted Ensley Gardens, shelter houses, playgrounds, tennis courts and a campground, along with the Bettis Family Sports Complex and the Envista Softball Complex. After a tournament, name the complex and the field number if you know it.
Clinton, Milford and Tuttle Creek lakes
Clinton State Park is four miles (6.4 km) from Lawrence, on the north shore of Clinton Lake. It has a marina, picnic shelters and trails used by walkers and mountain bikers. Milford State Park, at the southeast end of Milford Lake, has campgrounds and a splash park with picnic areas, a playground and beaches close by. Near Manhattan, Tuttle Creek Lake has more than 100 miles (160 km) of rugged, wooded shoreline, and the state park's River Pond area has a swim beach.
Arkansas City and the smaller towns
Arkansas City sits between the Arkansas and Walnut rivers in the southwestern part of Cowley County, in south central Kansas. On the city's own parks list, Pershing Park has sports fields, a playground and a shelter, and Wilson Park has a splash pad, pickleball courts and picnic tables. For Arkansas City, and for towns we have not named, we start with whose ground it is: a city park, a school or your own yard.

At the state park lakes, wind is the thing to mention. The lake at Cheney is known for its dependable winds, so on a lake shore mark the spot with something that will not blow away, and tell us where you first put your things down.
First freeze and snow, by Kansas City's figures
Kansas City, on the state line, has its average first fall freeze in late October and a 30-year average of about 18 inches (46 cm) of snow a season, by National Weather Service records. Those are Kansas City's numbers, not Wichita's. Before the cold arrives, measure from things that will still be standing in January.

Go back in daylight and walk that line once, slowly, looking and not raking. Photograph the infield from home plate, mark where you played and which dugout you used, and ask the league whether a ring was handed in.
My class ring came off on the practice field at my high school in Lawrence. My mom is looking at a metal detector rental for the weekend. Is that a good idea?
It can be, for a ring that size lost this week on short grass, in a corner you can point to. Ask the school office whether a ring has been handed in, too. For a whole field, a thin chain or an earring, or anything in lake water, a detectorist makes more sense.

I came off my mountain bike on the trails at Clinton State Park, and my phone and the chain I wear are gone. I know the spot to within a few yards. Is that good enough?
Yes, a few yards (a few metres) of trail is a small search. Tell us the trail name, which way you were riding and anything fixed near the fall, such as a marker or a junction.
My daughter lost a small gold cross pendant at her graduation in Topeka, held on the school's football field. How do we say where on a field that size?
