A watch comes off in the waves more often than people think. The strap goes in the wash, or it is slipped into a pocket that turns out to have a hole in it. A watch is a large piece of metal and easy for a detector to hear, so the work is covering the right strip of sand. What decides that is how soon someone searches and whether it went into dry sand or the surf.

The first hour after a loss on the Jersey Shore
Before you leave the sand, fix the spot. Note the street end or beach entrance, take one photo towards the boardwalk and one out to sea, and drop a pin on your phone. Tell the lifeguards or the beach office, since jewelry is often handed in.
Then message us the pin, your photos, what came off and when. The time fixes the tide: the wet sand you walked on is under water a few hours later, and the visit is planned around low water. Say whether it went into dry sand, the wash or deeper water, because those are three different searches. Cape May, Wildwood and Atlantic City have their own pages.

Jersey Shore beaches where rings and jewelry go missing
Sandy Hook, above Sea Bright
North of Long Branch and Sea Bright, Sandy Hook is a long spit of beach reached from Highlands on Route 36. Its ocean lots are lettered, from Beach A up to Gunnison and North Beach at the northern end, and lifeguards sit at Beach C and Beach D from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Give us the letter you parked at, and say whether you swam off the ocean side or the calm bay side.
Pier Village and the Long Branch city beaches
The City of Long Branch beaches run from Seaview Avenue south to West End, with 22 beach entrances. The promenade sits above the sand at Pier Village, with ramps down at Morris and Chelsea Avenues, so the entrance you used places you within a couple of blocks. Army Corps sand pumping from north of Pier Village to Seven Presidents Park is due between late autumn 2026 and March 2027, so that stretch is best searched before the new sand arrives.
Seven Presidents Oceanfront Park
North of Seaview Avenue, this Monmouth County park has 38 acres and about a mile of beach, with dunes crossed at marked paths and two jetties by the boat launch area. People surf here and play volleyball near the pavilion, and a volleyball court is one of the better places to lose something: a small marked area rather than open beach.
Asbury Park
The city describes a mile of sand in front of its boardwalk. The beach office is on the boardwalk at First Avenue.
Bradley Beach and Belmar
Bradley Beach is guarded in full season. Belmar's boardwalk, rebuilt after Hurricane Sandy, is 1.3 miles long (about 2.1 km), with Shark River Inlet on the northern edge of the borough and a municipal marina of more than 100 slips. A phone or keys dropped off a marina dock is diver or wading ground rather than beach sand.
Jenkinson's and the Point Pleasant Beach oceanfront
Jenkinson's controls the beach in front of its boardwalk, between Central and New Jersey Avenues. Martell's runs another stretch, Jenkinson's bought the Risden's beach in 2019, and Maryland Avenue Beach is the borough's own, so say which gate you came through. The separate Borough of Point Pleasant has guarded beaches on the Manasquan River at River Avenue and Maxson Avenue, where the water is calm river rather than surf.
Lavallette and Seaside Heights
Lavallette has an ocean beach with surfing zones at Haddonfield, Brown and Dover Avenues, and a guarded bay beach at Brooklyn Avenue, which is much kinder to a search than the ocean side. Further south are the Seaside Heights beach and Casino Pier.

Sand, tides and water from Long Branch to Seaside Heights
Tides of 4 to 5 feet
NOAA tide datums give a mean range of 4.7 feet (about 1.4 metres) at Sandy Hook (station 8531680), the nearest reference for Long Branch, and 4.02 feet (about 1.23 metres) at Manasquan Inlet (station 8532591), at the north end of Point Pleasant Beach.
Sand that moves and gets topped up
The Long Branch beach is largely pumped sand. Stockton University surveys show sand drifting north along Long Branch, with West End losing it faster than Morris Avenue. A ring in dry sand stays near the top, while one in wet sand works down with each tide.
Surf, rip currents and water temperature
Any wading search follows the National Weather Service rip current risk for Eastern Monmouth and Coastal Ocean. Sea temperature off Long Branch averages about 74°F (23°C) in August, so water searches are realistic from June to early October.
Ocean sand, river sand and bay water
The ocean beaches from Long Branch to Seaside Heights are surf and moving wet sand. The bay beach at Brooklyn Avenue and the Manasquan River beaches are calm water, where something that goes in stays close to where it fell. A marina dock is different again: soft bed, deeper water, wading or diving ground rather than sand.
Situations we are asked about, Long Branch down to Island Beach
My watch came off in the surf at Belmar. Do I have to know the exact spot?
Not exact, but close. Belmar has a boardwalk 1.3 miles long (about 2.1 km) with a street end every block, so name the one you walked down, then say how deep you were, knee, waist or chest, and roughly what time you went in.
I lost my wedding band on the beach at Asbury Park. Who do I tell first?
The beach office, which is on the boardwalk at First Avenue. Describe the band and leave a number. The city says lost items are transferred to Asbury Park Police, so ring them a day or two later as well. Then send us where your towels were, counted from the nearest boardwalk entrance, because the city describes a mile of sand in front of it.
My ring came off at Jenkinson's in Point Pleasant Beach. Does it matter whose beach it was?
It does, because the oceanfront there is split between several owners. A 2011 PolitiFact check found that Jenkinson's, Martell's, Risden's and others owned more than 42 acres of beach, while the borough owned only the 1.03 acre Maryland Avenue Beach. Report it at the beach office for the stretch you were on, then tell us which stretch that was and how far from the boardwalk you sat.
I lost an earring at Bradley Beach in June. Is something that small even worth looking for?
It is, on a small patch. Ask at the Beach Department at 701 Main Street first, in case it was handed in. A stud gives a faint signal, so a detectorist works slowly and close to the sand, which only pays off over the few yards around your towels. Photograph that patch against the nearest entrance and say whether you were on dry sand or down by the water.
We lost a ring at Lavallette. Does it matter if it was the ocean or the bay beach?
It does. The ocean beach has surf and a wet sand band that moves with every tide, while the guarded bay beach at Brooklyn Avenue is calm water where a ring stays close to where it went in. Tell the lifeguard headquarters at Philadelphia Avenue and the ocean, then tell us which beach it was, and on the ocean side whether you were near the surfing zones at Haddonfield, Brown or Dover Avenue.
My chain broke somewhere at Island Beach State Park. It is miles long, is that hopeless?
Not if you can name your parking area. Island Beach State Park runs about 10 miles between the ocean and Barnegat Bay, just south of Seaside Park, so the first question is ocean side or bay side, and the second is which walkover you came through. A broken chain often drops in two places, where it snapped and where you noticed it, so mark both.
Metal detector rental NJ: should I rent one and search myself?
You can, though a hired machine takes practice and a ring sinks into wet sand quickly. Dry sand on a small patch is where it is worth a go. Otherwise tell us what happened, and you will have the costs in front of you before anything is booked.
