Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area, eight miles (about 13 km) northeast of Ogallala, has white sand beaches, in Nebraska Game and Parks' own words, and some of its camping is on the beach itself. A lost ring that slid off with the sunscreen, or car keys shaken out of a towel, could be just under the surface of loose sand.

Before the towels and the tent come up
Leave the towels, the chairs or the tent where they are for a few more minutes, because they show where you were sitting. Stand back and photograph the set-up with a campground sign, a boat ramp or a picnic shelter in the frame. Drop a map pin while you stand on the spot. At Lake McConaughy, photograph the water's edge as well and write down the date.

Lake McConaughy's walk-in beaches and camping beaches
Lake McConaughy covers 30,000 surface acres (about 12,100 hectares), so the name of the lake alone does not tell us much. Large walk-in beach areas for day visitors sit near the entrances to the Martin Bay, Arthur Bay, Sandy Beach and Cedar View campgrounds, and each camping beach has a smaller one inside it. Give us the nearest campground or bay first, then how far you were from the water's edge.
The little lake below Kingsley Dam
Lake Ogallala lies on the east side of Kingsley Dam and goes by "the little lake". At 320 acres (about 130 hectares) it is small, its shoreline is protected from the wind, and it has a kayak launch dock at the North Boat Ramp. It does not have its neighbour's sandy beaches, so the place to describe is a campsite, a fishing access or the launch dock.
Swimming beaches at Branched Oak and Pawnee
Branched Oak State Recreation Area has about 1,800 acres (730 hectares) of water and two swimming beaches, one of them on Lieber's Point, so say which beach you were on. Pawnee State Recreation Area, close to Lincoln, has 740 acres (about 300 hectares) of water and two swimming beaches of its own, one of them at Area 1. At either park, tell us the area number on the sign if there was one.
Holmes Lake and Pioneers Park in Lincoln
Holmes Lake Park is a regional park laid out round a 110-acre (about 45 hectare) lake. It has a playground, ball diamonds, picnic shelters and a hiker-biker trail. Pioneers Park has the Pinewood Bowl Theater, where concerts and a summer musical are staged, along with playfields and ponds. Say which shelter, diamond or path you were nearest.
Omaha's lake parks and Heartland of America Park
Zorinsky Lake Park has more than 255 acres (about 103 hectares) with playgrounds, baseball diamonds, soccer fields and trails. Lake Cunningham has boating, disc golf and a 6.2-mile (10 km) concrete trail round the lake. Standing Bear Lake has a playground, picnic shelters and 3.3 miles (5.3 km) of trail. Heartland of America Park, part of The RiverFront, has a sweeping lawn with views of the Missouri River, a lake with a fountain and the Skate Ribbon.
Louisville's sandpit lakes, Platte River State Park and Lewis and Clark Lake
Louisville State Recreation Area is 192 acres (about 78 hectares) under tall cottonwoods, with sandpit lakes. Lake No. 2 has the swimming beach, and the park also has a floating playground in summer. Platte River State Park, halfway between Lincoln and Omaha, has cabins, a campground and a spray park. Lewis and Clark State Recreation Area is on the reservoir that straddles Nebraska's northeast border with South Dakota, and its swimming beach is just west of the Weigand Marina.
The Niobrara River at Valentine
The Niobrara National Scenic River runs past Valentine, and much of it is easy paddling by canoe, kayak or tube. Over 200 waterfalls come down its bluffs, Berry Falls among them. For something lost on a float, tell us where you put in, where you took out and where you stopped along the way.

An opinion on your case before you decide
Keys dropped beside a campsite at Martin Bay are one kind of search. A thin chain lost on a walk along the shore is another. It may be a long shot, and you would hear that from us first.
Why we ask which bay and what day
At Lake McConaughy we ask the date and where the water's edge was, because the park lists its boat ramps as available depending on water levels. At Branched Oak or Pawnee we ask for the area number.

Open shore or sheltered bay
Wind surfers are among the people Lake McConaughy draws. Some of its bays stay calm on a windy afternoon, and Lake Ogallala below the dam is often sheltered. For a lost ring on that shore, tell us whether you were out in the open or tucked into a bay.
Where the water's edge was that day
Boat ramps at Lake McConaughy are available depending on water levels, the park says, so the water's edge is not in the same place every summer. A photo of it with the date fixes where it was on your day.
Skating and ski season
Holmes Lake has ice skating among its activities, Branched Oak lists cross-country skiing, and the Skate Ribbon at Heartland of America Park turns to ice skating in winter. If something goes missing late in the year, photograph the place against a tree or a light pole before snow covers it.
Answers for Nebraska beaches, parks and lake water
We are beach camping at Martin Bay on Lake McConaughy and my wife's engagement ring came off between the tent and the water. Do we keep sifting the sand?
Stop sifting for now and mark things instead. Photograph the tent from the water's edge and the water's edge from the tent. Drop a map pin while you stand where she thinks it happened. Send those on WhatsApp with a photo of the ring.
The truck keys were on a towel at the walk-in beach by Arthur Bay and now they are gone. I searched lost keys on my phone and only got locksmiths. What now?
That is work for a metal detectorist, and looking for one who can get to Arthur Bay is our part. Yours is to show where the towel was: a photo looking back toward the campground entrance, a pin, and the distance to the water.
My watch came off at the swim beach on Lieber's Point at Branched Oak on Saturday. My sister says there must be metal detecting Nebraska groups online that would help. Should I post there?
You can, though a public post tells strangers where a watch is lying. Write to us as well, and say whether it came off on the sand or in the water, how deep you were, and what you were in line with on the shore.
My son's medical ID bracelet came off on the beach at Pawnee Lake an hour ago and we are still here. My husband has metal detector rental near me open on his phone. Should he go and get one?
It can work for a loss that fresh. A rented detector suits something dropped on dry sand or a lawn, inside a patch you can mark out with a heel. Wet sand, the water itself, a long stretch of beach or something as small as an earring is where a detectorist makes more sense.
My husband's wedding band flew off as he threw on the disc golf course at Lake Cunningham in Omaha, into rough grass. He wants to go back with a rake tonight. Will that help?
Better to mark it than rake it. Note which hole it was, where he stood to throw and which way his arm was swinging. A photo from the tee with him pointing along the line gives a detectorist a strip to start on.
I pulled my glove off at the edge of Holmes Lake in Lincoln while we were ice skating, and my ring went into the snow on the bank. Should I dig for it?
Not yet. Photograph the bank first, footprints and all, with a bench, a tree or a light pole in the frame. Drop a pin, then message us.
My Oura ring slipped off on the floating playground at Louisville State Recreation Area and went into the lake. Is that the end of it?
