Between the machine shed and the back door there may be gravel, then grass, then a worked garden, and past the garden the rough strip where the yard stops and the field starts. When a ring comes off on a day spent across all of it, the whole property feels like the search area. It does not have to be. This page shows how to bring the search for a lost wedding ring on a farm or in a big garden down to a few marked patches.

The same goes for an engagement ring, an Oura ring, earrings, a necklace, a bracelet or chain, an Apple Watch, a key fob, metal-framed glasses or a hearing aid, in a town yard, a city park or on a lake beach.
Stake it and photograph it before the ground is worked again
Write down, in order, which ground you were on that day. Then go to each one and mark it.
On a gravel drive or yard, set a stake at each end of the stretch you walked and keep vehicles off it if you can, because a ring could be pressed down under a wheel. Hold off on fresh gravel and on grading.
On grass, leave the mowing for now and flag the corners of the patch. If it has been mown since, tell us where the clippings went. In the garden, put the hoe and the tiller away and note which rows you worked. Along the field, name the gate, the corner post or the row end you were nearest, and tell us if field work is due there.
Then screenshot the aerial view of your place in a map app, circle those patches and send it on WhatsApp with a few photos and a picture of the item. Finding the detectorist is our side of it.

Away from the farm, from West Okoboji to the Mississippi
Gull Point and Pikes Point on West Okoboji
On West Okoboji Lake, Gull Point State Park is a shaded park with a swimming beach, a lodge that holds group events and a campground. Pikes Point State Park, on the same lake, has a swim beach with a platform out in the swimming area, picnic tables with views of the lake and a stone shelter. For a loss at Spirit Lake or another of the Iowa Great Lakes, name the beach or the dock.
Big Creek, Gray's Lake and a park lake in Ames
About 20 miles (32 km) from Des Moines, near Saylorville Lake, Big Creek State Park has a beach, picnic shelters round its lake, a big wooden playground and a sports field. In Des Moines itself, Gray's Lake Park has a sandy public swimming beach, a picnic area, a playground and a walk round the lake that crosses a long footbridge. In Ames, Ada Hayden Heritage Park has a lake with a canoe and kayak launch, picnic shelters and paths. Tell us the shelter, the playground or the side of the lake you were on.
Lake Macbride and Coralville Lake
Pontoons, canoes, kayaks and paddle boards are rented at Lake Macbride State Park, which also has a swimming beach with food concessions in summer and trails round the lake. Coralville Lake lies in the Iowa River valley just north of Iowa City. On its shore, West Overlook Day Use Area sits just above the dam with a boat ramp, a swimming beach, a playground, picnic sites and a sand volleyball court. Tell us which of those you were using.
Clear Lake State Park's beach and picnic grounds
The sandy beach at Clear Lake State Park is 900 feet (about 275 metres) long, with a lodge near it, picnic grounds with tables and grills, and a campground. On a beach that long, a photo taken from where your towels were, with the lodge or something else fixed in the frame, does more than a description.
The Mississippi riverfront at Bettendorf and Davenport
In Bettendorf a paved trail with open views of the Mississippi runs from Leach Park to Duck Creek Parkway. Leach Park, a trailhead, has a boat launch, shelters and picnic tables. In Davenport, LeClaire Park has a band shell with fixed outdoor seating, a picnic shelter and a way onto the riverfront recreation trail. For keys or a ring lost along a riverfront path, tell us which bench, which shelter or which end of the car park, and send a photo looking both ways along the path.

Once the aerial view and the photos are in, Bartek tells you plainly how he sees it. A flagged strip of lawn reads very differently from a whole day's fencing.
Questions about the farm calendar
Expect to be asked what is planned for that ground: when the lawn is next due a mow, whether gravel is on order, when the field edge will be worked. Those dates matter to the planning as much as the map does.

Frozen ground in winter and swimming beaches in summer
Snow cover and frost depth
Deep freezing of Iowa soil is most common when little snow lies on it through the coldest part of winter, by Iowa State University Extension's account, and a foot (30 cm) or more of snow often means the frost goes less deep. If a ring goes missing late in the year, mark the patch with stakes tall enough to stand above snow.
Garden rows and tilled edges
For a garden bed or a tilled edge, the note of which rows you worked, and anything done to them since, goes to the detectorist along with your photos.
At the swimming beaches
For West Okoboji, Clear Lake, Big Creek or Lake Macbride, say whether the item went on dry sand, at the water's edge, inside the swimming area or off a boat, and how far up you the water came.
Iowa questions, starting at the machine shed
My husband's wedding band came off somewhere between the machine shed and the house. The drive is gravel and gets driven on every day. What do we do tonight?
Mark the strip he walked, a stake or a bucket at each end, and keep wheels off it if you can. Photograph it from both ends while there is light.
My engagement ring came off while I weeded the vegetable garden at our place near Ames. My husband wants to run the tiller through to turn it up. Should he?
No, leave the tiller where it is. A detectorist wants the soil as it was when the ring came off. Tell us which rows you weeded and where the pulled weeds were thrown.
Dad's class ring came off while he was fixing fence along the bean field. My brother searched metal detecting Iowa and sent me this page. How do we narrow a fence that long?
By posts and gates. Ask your dad which stretch he worked on, from which gate or corner post to which, and where the truck stood. Then photograph that stretch from each end.
My ring came off while I was mowing round three trees at our place outside Iowa City. Would a metal detector rental do the job?
It might. The loss is fresh, it is on lawn and you can point at the patch, which is where renting one yourself is reasonable. For a large area, wet sand or water, or an item as small as an earring, a detectorist makes more sense.
My daughter's necklace came undone in the water near the swim platform at Pikes Point on West Okoboji. Is there any way to say where that was?
Yes, from the shore. Stand where she walked in and photograph the platform, then tell us which side of it she was on, how far from it and how deep the water was on her.
I took my Oura ring off to put sunscreen on the kids at a picnic site at West Overlook on Coralville Lake, and it never went back on. Can a detectorist work from a picnic site we have already left?
Yes, if you can say which site. Describe it by what it was next to, such as the playground, the beach or the boat ramp, and tell us where the sunscreen bag sat: table, bench or grass.
My car key fob was in my shorts pocket when I fell off a paddle board at Lake Macbride, not far off the beach. Back on shore the pocket was open. Can that be searched for?
Possibly. It turns on how closely you can place the fall: how far off the beach, what on shore you were level with, whether you could stand. If the spot is vague it may be a long shot, and you would hear that from us first.
