Cook Islands
Lost a ring in a Cook Islands lagoon?
Muri, Titikaveka, Aroa and Avarua on Rarotonga, and Ootu Beach, One Foot Island and Honeymoon Island out on the Aitutaki lagoon.
An Oura ring lost on Muri Lagoon can be looked for, because the lagoon beaches here are shallow with sandy bottoms. What settles it is how closely you can trace the paddle: where you launched, where you stopped, and when you noticed your finger was bare.
Ring Seekers is a lost ring and jewellery recovery service that works with experienced local metal detectorists to search for a ring, wedding band, watch, keys or phone lost in the Cook Islands.
Tell us what happened and where. We choose an experienced detectorist who knows the beach, brief them with your map and photos, and tell you honestly if the odds are poor.
A windy south-east on Rarotonga, a vast shallow lagoon on Aitutaki
Rarotonga's beaches are free and open to everyone, and the lagoon beaches are shallow with sandy bottoms. Muri, on the south-east side, is the busy hub for water sports, and the south of the island has its windy days, with the prevailing wind from the south-east. Aroa, on the south-west, has far less wind than Muri.
Aitutaki is a long, narrow, fish-hook shaped island inside a huge lagoon with motu scattered across it. Lagoon cruises carry visitors out to the motu and the sandbars, and kiteboarders cross the sandy shallows on the south-east trade winds.
What working with Ring Seekers looks like
No need to explain it twice
You write to one person on WhatsApp, whether from Rarotonga, from Aitutaki or after flying home, and that person stays with your case.
Your cruise day, written up
For a loss on the Aitutaki lagoon, the detectorist gets the cruise, each motu it stopped at, and your photos from every stop, as well as your pins.
Beyond the reef is different
If it went beyond the reef, out at the Avarua passage or on a fishing trip, that is a long shot, and you would hear that from us first.
The cost before the search
We explain the costs before any search is booked, in the same WhatsApp chat.
Beaches and motu on the two main islands
Four places round Rarotonga, then Aitutaki, where most losses happen on a lagoon day. Find the one you were at, then send us the pin.
Rarotonga first, then the Aitutaki lagoon
Muri Beach and the lagoon
Muri Beach, on the south-east side of Rarotonga, is the hub for sea scooter tours, kayaks, paddleboards, lagoon cruises and kitesurfing, with cafes, bars and restaurants right on the water. The motu are close by, and people swim or kayak out to them. Say which activity you were doing and where you set off from.
Titikaveka and Tikioki
Titikaveka, just south of Muri, has turquoise water and white sand shaded by palm trees, good for lying still or snorkelling. At Tikioki, the Fruits of Rarotonga area of the lagoon has coral bommies full of fish, and a mild current can run inside the lagoon there when a south-easterly is blowing. Tell us which bommie or which stretch of sand you were near.
Aroa Beach, Arorangi
Aroa Beach, on the south-west of Rarotonga in Arorangi, is a snorkelling and sunbathing beach beside the Aroa Lagoon Marine Reserve, where coral sits in bright turquoise water and fish are plentiful. It gets far less wind than Muri. Pin the place you went into the water.
Avarua
Avarua is the town on Rarotonga's north shore. On Saturday mornings the Punanga Nui Market sells cooked food, fresh produce, fish and crafts, and at the wharf the boiler of the old Maitai wreck shows above the water. For the market, name the stall; for the wharf, say where you stood.
Ootu Beach
Ootu Beach, on the east side of Aitutaki, is good for swimming and snorkelling, and most lagoon cruises leave from it, so people wait here before boarding. Akitua, a motu, lies just off it. If something went missing before a cruise, the wait on the sand and the walk to the boat both count.
One Foot Island (Tapuaetai)
One Foot Island is reached by boat and has a beautiful beach and snorkelling among giant clams and corals, and visitors get their passport stamped at the post office hut. Several cruises serve lunch here. Not far away, a white sandbar comes and goes with the tide, so tell us whether you were on the motu or out on the sandbar.
Honeymoon Island (Motu Tavake)
Honeymoon Island is known for the white coral sandbar that juts out from its palm-covered main part. The lagoon floor here is coral sand, and the snorkelling is good at the end of the spit. Say whether you were on the spit, in the water off it, or under the palms.
Arutanga and the cruise motu
The wharf at Arutanga is busy with local fishermen and with lagoon and fishing tours coming and going, and on Saturdays the market at the Orongo Centre sells sarongs, pandanus hats and fresh produce. Cruises also stop at motu such as Maina, Akaiami and Moturakau.

How a Cook Islands case runs
Rarotonga or Aitutaki, beach or motu, it runs the same way.
Your opening message
What is missing, which island, which beach or motu, and roughly when you last had it.
The map and the pictures
Drop a pin where you were, add a photo from that spot, and one of the ring, watch or earring, or a similar piece.
Someone to go out
We look for a metal detectorist who can reach the place and brief them from your pin, photos and account of the day.
Only if you want it
You say yes before anything is arranged, and the report afterwards sets out the ground searched and anything found.
Questions about the Cook Islands
My Oura ring came off while I was paddleboarding across Muri Lagoon.
Start with the route. Pin where you launched on Muri Beach, where you stopped, whether that was one of the motu, and where you came back in. The lagoon here is shallow with a sandy bottom, which helps, and any photo someone took of you on the board is worth sending with its time.
The engagement ring went missing after a proposal on a motu in the Aitutaki lagoon.
Name the motu and the boat that took you out, and send the photos of the moment, since they show exactly where you both stood. If it happened on One Foot Island or Honeymoon Island, say whether you were on the sandbar or the main part of the islet.
A watch came off snorkelling the coral bommies at Tikioki.
Tell us where you went in from the beach at Titikaveka, which bommies you swam round and how far out they were. A mild current can run inside the lagoon there when there is a south-easterly wind, so the wind that day is worth adding too.
I lost my phone on a Saturday morning at the Punanga Nui Market in Avarua.
Go back to the stalls you visited first and ask, in case someone has put it aside. If it has not turned up, list the stalls in order, say whether you walked down to the wharf afterwards, and send a pin for each stop.
A bracelet went on the sandbar near One Foot Island.
That sandbar comes and goes with the tide, so the time you were on it matters as much as the place. Tell us which cruise you were on, when you walked out, and whether you had also been snorkelling or eating lunch on One Foot Island that day.
One earring is missing after a stop at Honeymoon Island.
Say whether you were out on the white sandbar, snorkelling at the end of the spit, or sitting under the palms, and send a close photo of the earring that is left. The lagoon floor there is coral sand, and a photo from your spot helps line it up.
We lost the scooter keys on Ootu Beach while waiting for our lagoon cruise.
Most lagoon cruises leave from Ootu Beach, so work back from where you parked, where you waited on the sand and where you boarded. Pin each of those, and say whether the keys could have gone into a bag that went on the boat.
A necklace came off while snorkelling at Aroa Beach.
Aroa is a snorkelling beach beside the Aroa Lagoon Marine Reserve, with coral in clear turquoise water. Tell us where you went in, which way you swam and where you came out, and describe the chain, the clasp and any pendant.
