Iceland
Lost a ring on a beach in Iceland?
Black sand below basalt columns near Vík, icebergs on Diamond Beach, and a golden sand beach in Reykjavík.
At Reynisfjara the black shoreline runs from the basalt columns towards the Reynisdrangar sea stacks, and something dropped on the beach there is worth a search. What decides it is where you stood: by the columns, near the cave, or out on the open sand.
Ring Seekers is a lost ring and jewellery recovery service that works with experienced local metal detectorists to search for a ring, wedding band, watch, keys or phone lost in Iceland. Tell us what happened and where. We choose an experienced detectorist who knows the beach, brief them with your map and photos, and tell you honestly if the odds are poor.
Diamond Beach on Breiðamerkursandur and Reykjavík's beach, parks and lakes are covered on this page too.
Black sand, ice and Reykjavík's lakes
Much of Iceland's coastline is covered in tiny fragments of volcanic rock rather than pale sand. On the South Coast, Reynisfjara lies near Vík, a village of black sand beaches and rough seas. In the southeast, icebergs drift out of Jökulsárlón and wash ashore on Diamond Beach, and on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula the shore at Djúpalónssandur is rounded black pebbles instead of sand.
Reykjavík has a beach of its own as well: Nauthólsvík, with golden sand inside seawalls. Reykjavík's residents also have Laugardalur, the Pond in the centre, and Elliðavatn, a shallow lake within the Reykjavík area.
Working with us from near or far
One person, one conversation
You deal with one person in one WhatsApp conversation all the way through, and it carries on just the same once you are back home.
Pictures instead of directions
The detectorist studies your pin and pictures before setting out. On a wide black beach or a pebble shore, they carry most of the weight.
Straight about the hardest cases
A ring that slipped off into Jökulsárlón among the icebergs is a long shot, and you would hear that from us first.
Costs up front
We explain the costs before any search is booked. Read them first, then choose.
Our Ring Finder Service Locations in Iceland
From the South Coast to Reykjavík and Snæfellsnes
The black beaches of the south come first, then Reykjavík's beach, parks and lake, and two more beaches farther afield.
Beaches, lagoons and city parks
Reynisfjara and Vík
Reynisfjara is framed by basalt columns, with the Reynisdrangar sea stacks rising just offshore and a cave called Hálsanefshellir in the rocks. The waves here are deceptive, even in the best weather. Nearby Vík is a village of black sand beaches and rough seas, with no harbour.
Diamond Beach and Jökulsárlón
On Breiðamerkursandur, icebergs drift out of Jökulsárlón and wash ashore on the black sand of Diamond Beach, and the scene changes from day to day as tides and weather move the ice. Fellsfjara is the black-sand beach next to the lagoon, with a short trail along Eystri-Fellsfjara. Jökulsárlón itself lies beside the Ring Road, with a café by the water.
Nauthólsvík, Reykjavík
The city runs the beach at Nauthólsvík, built by bringing in golden sand and building seawalls. A sailing club shares the bay. Tell us if it was the sand, the water inside the seawalls or the sea outside them.
Ægissíða, Laugardalur and the Pond
The path along Ægissíða follows Faxaflói Bay and is a place to watch the sunset. Laugardalur, a sheltered valley and park with walking and cycling paths, holds the botanical garden and the city's main campsite. In the centre, Tjörnin, the Pond, and Hljómskálagarðurinn park beside it are where people walk and play.
Elliðavatn and Heiðmörk
Elliðavatn is a lake of about 2 kilometres, only around 1 to 2 metres deep, and popular for angling. It lies near Heiðmörk, with its hiking and biking trails, small forests and lava formations.
Djúpalónssandur
On the western edge of Snæfellsjökull National Park, Djúpalónssandur is a small bay ringed by lava formations, where rounded black pebbles cover the shore instead of fine sand.
Stokksnes and Sólheimasandur
At Stokksnes, black sand and grassy dunes lie beneath the peaks of Vestrahorn, and the wind ripples the dark dunes. Sólheimasandur is a vast black volcanic plain on the South Coast that people cross on foot.

How a search in Iceland is arranged
It can all be done after you have left.
Start with a message
On WhatsApp, tell us the item, the beach, lagoon or park, and the day, even if you are already home.
The spot and the item
Share a map pin and photos of where you were standing, plus a picture showing the item itself or on your hand.
The right person for the place
Once you are ready to go ahead, we track down a metal detectorist able to travel there and hand over everything you sent.
What happened
Afterwards you get a plain account of where the detectorist searched and the outcome.
Questions about Iceland
I was photographing the sea stacks at Reynisfjara and now my ring is gone.
Tell us where you stood: by the basalt columns, near the cave, or on the open sand facing the Reynisdrangar stacks. Send the last few photos from before you noticed, which help us see your position, and mention any trip down to the water's edge.
We lost the rental car keys walking among the ice on Diamond Beach.
The ice on Diamond Beach moves from day to day with the tides and weather, so the icebergs you remember will not be a guide for long. A pin on where you parked, the stretch you walked and photos from that day are what count, including any taken on the Eystri-Fellsfjara trail.
A bracelet came off at the beach in Nauthólsvík.
Nauthólsvík has golden sand and seawalls, with the open sea beyond. Tell us if you were on the sand or in the water when it went, and pin the place your towel and bag were.
Our son's watch went into Elliðavatn while he was fishing from the shore.
The lake is only around 1 to 2 metres deep. Pin the place he fished from, say whether he waded in and how far, and add any walk you took on the Heiðmörk trails that day.
An earring went missing somewhere in Laugardalur.
Laugardalur is a valley park with a lot in it, so narrow it down: the walking and cycling paths, the botanical garden or the campsite. Pin each place you stopped, with a photo of it if you have one.
I dropped my phone among the pebbles at Djúpalónssandur.
The shore there is rounded black pebbles, not fine sand, and the bay is small. Pin the spot, send a photo that shows the lava formations behind you, and tell us if you went to the water after that.
A bracelet came off somewhere in the dunes at Stokksnes.
Stokksnes has black sand and grassy dunes below the peaks of Vestrahorn, and the wind ripples the dark sand. Pin where you walked into the dunes and each place you stopped for photos. A picture with Vestrahorn behind you shows the angle you were standing at, which is the best landmark there.
We stayed in Vík, and the ring could have gone either on the black sand or in the village.
Mark both: the stretch of black sand you walked and the places in the village where you stopped, took gloves off or washed your hands. List them in order with approximate times; the search plan starts from the last point you are certain about.
Iceland
Reynisfjara, Diamond Beach or Reykjavík
Send a pin and a single line on WhatsApp, the place and the missing item, and that is enough to begin. Photos can wait until you have them.
