A ring lost on a beach in Rhodes can often be found, provided you can place the spot before the sand is walked over for days. What decides it is how exactly you can mark where it happened, and whether it went into dry sand, pebbles or the sea.

How a search on Rhodes works, from Elli Beach to St Paul's Bay
In the first hour, fix the spot. Line yourself up with two things that do not move, such as the diving platform and the aquarium at Elli Beach, a beach bar and the end of a sunbed row at Faliraki, or the chapel and the gap in the rocks at St Paul's Bay, and take a photo each way. Drop a pin, note the time and whether you were on dry sand, pebbles or in the water, then send it to us on WhatsApp with a photo of the ring.
We find a detectorist who can reach that beach and brief them with your marked map, the time and your photos, so a search can still go ahead after you have gone home. Pebbles at Elli, long sand at Faliraki and the rocky coves each call for a different approach, so name the beach as well as the resort.

Elli Beach, Rhodes Town
Elli is the town beach on the northern tip of the island, shingle and pebbles from Mandraki Harbour to the Rhodes Aquarium, with a concrete diving platform standing in the water. The sea is usually calm but the bottom drops away suddenly near the shore. A ring that slides off with sun cream on the way out of the water lands on pebbles and works down between the stones.
Faliraki
Faliraki is 5 kilometres of fine sand with shallow water on the north east coast, split into sections named after the hotels behind them. Rings come off at the sunbeds and in the shallows, watches and Oura rings in the water sports zone. At the southern end, Kathara is a small calm bay shaped like a little harbour, and Traganou is the one Faliraki beach with no sand, only small pebbles.
Anthony Quinn Bay and Ladiko
Anthony Quinn Bay is about 4 kilometres south of Faliraki, a narrow beach of sand, gravel and stones, with pebbles in the water and rocks that people snorkel from. Ladiko, 400 metres to the west, has sand and pebbles between the rocks, sunbeds and a taverna. A ring lost on the sand at Ladiko is a fair case. One lost off the rocks at Anthony Quinn Bay is a job for someone in the water searching by eye.
Lindos, Megali Paralia and Pallas
The two beaches below Lindos village, Megali Paralia (the big beach) and the smaller, busier Pallas, are fine golden sand with clear, shallow water, sunbeds to hire, and sea kayaks, pedalos and boat trips from the bay. A ring lost at the sunbeds or in the shallows here is a good case for a detector.
St Paul's Bay, Lindos
St Paul's Bay is the almost enclosed cove on the far side of the Acropolis, a walk from Lindos, with very calm water and two beaches: the larger southern one is man made golden sand, the smaller northern one sand and gravel, both with sunbeds. The small chapel on the hillside is a popular wedding venue. A ring dropped on the rocks during photographs is looked for by eye first. One lost in the shallows off the sand is a good case for a detector.

What decides a search on this island.
Tides
The Mediterranean is nearly tideless, a few tens of centimetres at most, so there is no low water window to plan around. A ring lost in the shallows at Faliraki or Lindos stays roughly where it went in unless a swell, a storm or the feet of many swimmers move it, and a search in the water is done with the detectorist wading.
Sand, pebbles and rock
Faliraki and Lindos are fine golden sand with shallow water, and Tsambika is golden sand too, the easiest ground on the island for a detector. Elli in Rhodes Town is shingle and pebbles, where a ring sinks between the stones and stays put but is harder to pinpoint. Anthony Quinn Bay is sand, gravel and stones with pebbles under the water, and the Kallithea coves are rocky, where a detector struggles and the search moves to a diver.
Wind, waves and water temperature
The east coast beaches on this page, from Kallithea down to Lindos, are the sheltered ones. The west coast at Ixia and Ialyssos is windy, wavy windsurfing water, so a ring lost in the sea there is moved about far more. The sea is warm through the season, and sun cream on wet fingers takes a ring off just as cold water does.
Lifeguards and busy months
Elli and Faliraki have lifeguards through the summer, and the Faliraki sunbeds are out from 10am to 5.30pm. Elli is packed on summer afternoons and quietest early or after 6pm, so a search on a busy beach is planned for early morning.
Questions about Rhodes beaches, Rhodes Town, Faliraki and Lindos
I lost my wedding ring at Elli Beach in Rhodes Town. What should I do first?
Line yourself up with two fixed things, such as the concrete diving platform and the aquarium at the northern end, photograph both directions and drop a pin. Elli is shingle and pebbles, and a ring dropped on pebbles slips down between the stones. Tell us whether you were on dry pebbles, at the waterline or in the water, and send a photo of the ring.
My Oura ring or watch came off in the sea at Faliraki. Is a search worth it?
An Oura ring and most watches contain metal and show on a detector, so it comes down to where you were. Faliraki is 5 kilometres of fine sand with shallow water and almost no tide, so an item lost in knee deep water stays close to where it went in unless a swell moves it. Tell us which section of the beach, ideally the hotel or beach bar whose sunbeds you used, and how deep you were standing. Further out, or off a jet ski, the odds are poor and we say so.
I lost a ring at Anthony Quinn Bay or Ladiko. Can it be found among the rocks?
Sometimes, but it is the hardest kind of loss on this coast. Anthony Quinn Bay has a narrow beach of sand, gravel and stones, with pebbles in the water and rocks that people snorkel from. A ring that came off while snorkelling has usually gone into a gap between stones, where rock confuses a detector and a diver searching by eye does better. Ladiko, 400 metres to the west, has sand and pebbles between the rocks and is easier.
I lost an earring or bracelet at Lindos beach or in St Paul's Bay. Can a detectorist find it?
A bracelet or a gold earring in sand is a fair case if you can place it to within a few metres. Lindos main beach, Megali Paralia, and the smaller Pallas beach are fine golden sand with clear, shallow water. St Paul's Bay is almost enclosed by rock and very calm, with man made golden sand at the southern end and sand and gravel at the northern one. A small stud gives a weak signal, so we need the sunbed row or the spot as exactly as you can give it, and a photo of the matching earring.
I dropped my phone or sunglasses at Mandraki Harbour or in the Old Town. Can anyone get them back?
A phone contains metal, but one that went over the harbour wall at Mandraki is under water, which is a job for a diver rather than a detectorist. For anything lost in the streets of the Old Town, start by retracing your steps and asking the shops. Plastic sunglasses do not show on a detector anywhere.
