The coast first, then inland.
Galveston Island, Bolivar and the bay
The Seawall runs for just over 10 miles, with cross streets as landmarks. Across the free ferry, Bolivar Peninsula has about 27 miles of Gulf beach where cars park on the sand, so at Crystal Beach the place the truck stood is the first thing we ask about. Details are on Galveston.
Houston, its lakes and its lawns
Lake Conroe, about 19,640 acres, lies roughly seven miles northwest of Conroe, and Lake Houston is about 18 miles northeast of Houston. Closer in, the search is often a lawn in Katy, Cypress or Pearland. Stop mowing, then read Houston.
The Coastal Bend
Port Aransas sits at the northern end of Mustang Island, an eighteen mile barrier island, and its beach carries numbered markers. North Beach in Corpus Christi has the USS Lexington as a fixed landmark, and Rockport Beach faces shallow bay water. Down the island, Padre Island National Seashore has Malaquite Beach, 4.5 miles (7.2 km) of sand kept free of cars, reached from the Malaquite Visitor Center, and on the Laguna Madre side Bird Island Basin, where warm, shallow water draws windsurfers. South Padre Island and the Laguna Madre
Isla Blanca Park is the southern tip, with a mile long jetty. North of it the city beach accesses run from Harbor Circle No. 1 up to Whitesands Circle No. 25. Behind Andy Bowie Park, the Laguna Madre flat used by kite surfers floods with the tide every day. See South Padre Island.
Austin, Lake Travis and Lady Bird Lake
Lake Travis's shoreline at Hippie Hollow is steep and rocky, Pace Bend Park has more than nine miles (14 km) of it, and the level rises and falls a long way. Around Lady Bird Lake, a loss is more often on the 10 mile (16 km) trail or the grass of Zilker Park. The page is Austin.
San Antonio, the Comal and the Guadalupe
The Comal rises at Comal Springs in New Braunfels and runs about 2.5 miles to the Guadalupe. Below Canyon Dam, River Road follows the Guadalupe for about 10 miles, and its crossings make good landmarks for anything lost from a tube. Canyon Lake has swim beaches at Comal Park and Canyon Park. North Texas reservoirs and city grass
Up here a lake means a reservoir. Lewisville Lake has 233 miles of shoreline, Joe Pool Lake has developed beaches at Loyd Park and Lynn Creek Park, and Eisenhower State Park on Lake Texoma has a sandy swimming cove near Denison. Waco to Texarkana, Amarillo to Freeport
Texas Parks and Wildlife places Lake Waco on the Bosque River inside the Waco city limits. Lake Meredith is 45 miles northeast of Amarillo on the Canadian River, and Lake Arrowhead is 15 miles southeast of Wichita Falls. In East Texas, Lake Tyler lies southeast of Tyler, Lake O' the Pines is 25 miles northeast of Longview, Lake Nacogdoches is 10 miles west of Nacogdoches, and Wright Patman Lake is 10 miles southwest of Texarkana. At Freeport, Bryan Beach has about three miles of natural beach and Quintana six miles with vehicle access. Around Kilgore or Midland, the search may just as well be a yard, a ball field or a ranch gate.

367 miles of Gulf beach
The Texas General Land Office counts 367 miles of Gulf beaches. Cars drive onto the sand at Bolivar, at Quintana and north of South Padre Island, and a passing tyre can press keys or a ring deeper. A search in the water waits for a calm day.
Tides you can almost ignore
NOAA gives a mean tide range of 1.46 feet (0.45 metres) at Galveston Pleasure Pier. Low water uncovers very little here, so how deep you were standing is the detail to remember.
Lake levels that move
There is no tide on a lake, but the level moves. LCRA counts Lake Travis as full at 681 feet above sea level. Texas Parks and Wildlife lists yearly swings of 4 to 10 feet at Lake Meredith, about 7 feet at Sam Rayburn and about 2 feet at Lake Tyler. Give us the date of the loss with the place.
A long warm season, and some cold water
NOAA averages at the Galveston Bay entrance run from 55.8 F (13.2 C) in January to 86.8 F (30.4 C) in August. The spring-fed Comal holds near 72 F (22 C) all year, and the Guadalupe runs colder below Canyon Dam. On South Padre Island, sea turtles nest from April through August.
Lost keys, rings and jewelry in Texas, your questions
We dropped the truck keys somewhere on the sand at Crystal Beach. Can a detector find them?
Yes, quite possibly. Metal keys show up well on a detector. What we need is where the truck stood, since keys can drop anywhere around the tailgate or the camp chairs. Write down the beach access road you came in on and photograph the truck where it is.
My key fob went in the water at a Lake Travis boat ramp. Is it worth asking?
It depends on the depth. A detectorist can only work the shallow margin where standing is safe, and anything further out is diving work. Tell us the date as well, because the Lake Travis shoreline moves a long way and the place you stood can later be dry ground.
My husband's wedding band came off while we were tubing the Comal. Where would anyone even start?
At the last bridge, exit or chute you remember passing. The city float in New Braunfels takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, so without a landmark the band could be anywhere along it, and that is a poor bet. With one, the stretch to search gets short.
I lost my class ring on the family ranch near Tyler a few years back. Is it too late?
Not necessarily. Pasture does not shift the way a beach does, so a ring can still be close to where it fell, only a little deeper. What counts is how small an area you can name. A gate, a pen, a trough or the place the trailer was parked is enough to start from.
Would a metal detector rental do the job for keys lost in my own yard?
It can. Renting one yourself can suit a fresh loss on dry sand or a lawn. A detectorist makes more sense for wet sand, water, a large area such as a pasture, or a small item such as an earring or a thin chain.
My Oura ring came off in the waves on South Padre and we fly home tomorrow. Now what?
A search can happen without you. Everything is handled on WhatsApp. Before you leave, note the name and number of the beach access you used and how deep you were standing. An Oura ring is a small titanium ring, so the more exact the spot, the better.
I am in Nacogdoches, not Houston or Dallas. Do you bother with small towns?
Yes. Nacogdoches, Wichita Falls, Midland or Texarkana, it makes no difference to us. We look for a detectorist who can reach the place. If we cannot find anyone for your town you hear that from us plainly.
