Bay Beach has fixed ways in and out, which puts an engagement ring lost there somewhere along a route you can retrace. What decides a search is how exactly you can put your towel on a map, and whether you wore it swimming in Lake Erie.

Metal detector hire and a second drive to Crystal Beach is a natural first thought. A rented machine does best on a small patch you already know, such as the driveway where the beach bag was emptied. In the lake, or across a whole afternoon of sand, an experienced detectorist is the stronger choice.
While you are still at Crystal Beach
Shake the towel out over an open bag rather than onto the sand, then turn out the beach bag and your pockets. Walk the mats back up to the ramp once, and ask the beach staff whether anyone has turned in a ring.
Later, pin the towel on a map and draw the line you walked to the exit and on to the car, adding the water if you swam. At Port Dover the pier gives you something to measure from. Send photos from the day even when the ring barely shows, because whatever stands behind you places the spot.

Bay Beach, Crystal Beach
Bay Beach, also known as Crystal Beach, is a Town of Fort Erie beach on Lake Erie with white sand and clear, warm water. An accessible ramp leads down to the sand, and beach mats give access to the water's edge. People take stand-up paddleboards and kayaks out from here, so say if you took one. The cafes and ice cream shops of Crystal Beach are just steps away; mention any stop on the way back.
Crystal Beach Waterfront Park and Crystal Ridge Park
Crystal Beach Waterfront Park has a boat launch and a municipal parking lot. Crystal Ridge Park is a Town community park serving Crystal Beach, Ridgeway and Thunder Bay, with a football field, a splash pad and a fenced off-leash dog area on grassy, treed ground.
Port Dover Beach and the pier
Port Dover has a beach on Lake Erie for swimming and lying on the sand, with mats that make it easier to cross with a wheelchair or a stroller. The pier draws anglers, couples and people watching the fishing tugs come back with their catch. At the end of the west pier, where it meets the harbour entrance, stands a heritage lighthouse, a landmark to measure your position from.
Turkey Point and Long Point
West of Port Dover, Turkey Point Beach is a long, shallow stretch of sand on Long Point Bay with many sandbars and a roped swimming area, a playground and picnic areas. Farther west, past Port Rowan, Long Point Provincial Park has more than a kilometre and a half of sandy beach on Lake Erie. Name the parking lot or beach access you used.
Powell Park and Riverfront Park, Port Dover
Powell Park, on the main street of Port Dover, has monuments, a gazebo, benches and picnic tables. Riverfront Park is on the channel beside the Port Dover Harbour Museum, with benches, picnic tables and a sun shade.
Sunset Beach, St Catharines
Sunset Beach is a sandy City of St Catharines beach on Lake Ontario. A concrete beach walk links the parking lot to the sand, with lounge chairs set along it, and the park has a playground, picnic tables under a sun shelter, a boat launch and a separate launch for non-motorised craft.
Queen Victoria Park, Niagara Falls
Queen Victoria Park runs beside the American and Horseshoe Falls, with a rock garden, a rose garden, benches and well-kept lawns where people stop for photos, and wedding ceremonies are held at spots along the river. Say which garden or bench you were at and whether you walked the railing by the Falls.
Lester B. Pearson Park, St Catharines
Lester B. Pearson Park is a City park with two lit soccer fields, East and West, used for games, plus a picnic pavilion, a playground and a splash pad. After a match, say which field it was and which side of it your bag was on.

Weekends at Crystal Beach can be busy. Tell us roughly what time you left and whether other groups were sitting close by, because neighbouring towels and umbrellas in your photos help place yours.
Along the Port Dover harbour
Say whether you were out on the pier, on the beach or at Riverfront Park by the channel. For anything that dropped into the water, add how far out along the pier you stood and which way you were facing.
After the beach
The hour after you left counts too: unloading the car, or shaking the towels out on the lawn. If the ring could be in the yard or the car, say so, because that is far less ground to cover.
Questions about Niagara and Lake Erie
The towel was halfway between the ramp and the water at Bay Beach, and the engagement ring has gone.
The search starts at the towel and works outward along the way you walked. The ramp and the beach mats running to the water's edge stay put, so place the towel against them: how far along from the ramp, how close to the mats. Say whether you swam, and whether you left by the Ashwood or the Schooley Road exit. Send all the photos you took that afternoon.
My wedding band came off while I was fishing from the Port Dover pier.
Start with what you saw or heard. The lighthouse at the end of the west pier makes a good point to measure from, so tell us whether you were out beside it or nearer the shore, and whether the band could be lying on the pier itself. If you are sure it went over the edge, say so plainly, and send a photo that shows where you stood.
Which part of Lester B. Pearson Park should I mark if I only noticed my bracelet was missing at home?
Every part you used. The park has the East and West soccer fields, a picnic pavilion, a playground and a splash pad, so name each one you spent time at and the bench or sideline where your things sat. Give the last time you know the bracelet was on, from a photo if you have one.
I was carrying a paddleboard down to the launch at Sunset Beach when I noticed my watch had gone.
At Sunset Beach the launch for non-motorised craft, the concrete beach walk from the parking lot and the lounge chairs along it are all fixed points to measure from. Say whether the watch could have come off on the walk, on the sand or out on the water, and tell us the brand and the kind of strap.
An earring went missing at the Powell Park gazebo in Port Dover. How do I say where I was?
Pick whatever you were closest to: the gazebo, one of the monuments, a bench or a picnic table. Mark where you stood, sat or had photos taken, and send a picture of the matching earring you still have.
The car keys went missing while we were launching the boat at Crystal Beach Waterfront Park.
Pin the launch ramp and your space in the municipal parking lot, then draw the walk between them. Say whether the keys could have gone into the water off the ramp or stayed on land, and what else is on the ring, such as a metal fob or a bottle opener.
A chain came off during a game on the football field at Crystal Ridge Park.
Say which end of the field you played and where your bag was left. Crystal Ridge Park also has a pavilion, a playground, a splash pad and a wooded area with recreation trails, so if you walked the trails afterwards, mark where you entered the woods and where you came out.
How do I describe where we sat on the beach at Port Dover?
Measure yourself against the pier first: right beside it or some way along the sand, and how far up from the water. If you were near the beach mats, mention them as a second marker. Then name the stretch you were on by the nearest landmark you remember behind you on the shore, and send a photo taken from your spot if you have one.
