A ring lost on a Zakynthos beach is often still there if the spot is marked and someone looks before the beach is set out again. What decides it is how exactly you can mark where it happened, whether it went into dry sand or the sea.

How a search on Zakynthos works, from Tsilivi to Gerakas
In the first hour, fix the spot. Line yourself up with two things that do not move, such as the watersports hut and a beach bar at Tsilivi, the Venetian bridge in the sea at Argassi, or the clay cliff at Gerakas, and take a photo each way. Drop a pin, note the time and whether you were on dry sand, at the waterline or in the water, then send it to us on WhatsApp with a photo of the ring.
We find a detectorist who can reach that beach and brief them with your marked map, the time and your photos. It helps to know which side of the island you were on. Laganas, Kalamaki, Gerakas, Dafni, Sekania and Marathonissi are loggerhead turtle nesting beaches inside the National Marine Park of Zakynthos. Tsilivi, Alykes, Alykanas, Argassi and Banana beach are outside the park.

Tsilivi
Tsilivi is the family resort on the north east coast, a few kilometres north of Zakynthos Town, with sand, a few scattered pebbles and shallow water that slopes out gently. Jet skis, water skiing and windsurfing run from the beach, and there is a diving centre on it. Rings come off at the sunbeds with sun cream and in the shallows, and watches and Oura rings go missing in the watersports zone.
Laganas
Laganas is soft, granular sand along the bay a short drive from the airport, shallow and crowded end to end in summer, with the nightlife strip behind it and pedalos and kayaks from the beach. The bay is the National Marine Park of Zakynthos, where an average of 1,200 loggerhead nests are laid each year, and the east end of Laganas is one of its six nesting beaches. A ring lost in the sea here stays roughly where it went in, because there is no tide to move it.
Kalamaki
Kalamaki is the quieter neighbour of Laganas, coarse light brown sand with a shallow seabed, partly organised with a couple of sunbed sections and long open stretches with nothing on them. The nesting beach here runs about 3,500 metres, the longest in the park, and towels and umbrellas sit within about 5 metres of the water. That strip by the water is where rings slip off.
Vasilikos, Banana beach and Agios Nikolaos
The Vasilikos peninsula in the south east has a chain of sandy beaches. Banana is fine golden sand, one of the longest beaches on the island, with a seabed that deepens gradually, beach bars, sunbeds in rows and jet skis, parasailing and paddleboards off the beach. Agios Nikolaos, named after the small church by the shore, is sandy with two beach bars and a watersports and diving centre on the beach, and Porto Zoro is a sandy beach with sunbeds and tavernas. On beaches this long the spot is the problem, so the sunbed row matters.
Gerakas and Dafni
Gerakas is the sandy beach under clay cliffs at the tip of Vasilikos, about 600 metres long, with clear shallow water, a lifeguard in summer, a few park managed sunbeds and no bars on the sand. It is a nesting beach where visitors sit within about 5 metres of the sea, as they do at Dafni, reached by a dirt road. Anything lost here is within that narrow strip, which helps.

What decides a search on this island.
Tides
The sea around Zakynthos rises and falls a few tens of centimetres at most, so there is no low water to wait for. A ring lost in the shallows stays close to where it went in unless a swell or the feet of a crowd move it, and a search in the water is done with the detectorist wading.
Sand from beach to beach
Tsilivi is sand with scattered pebbles, Alykes and Alykanas soft sand that stays shallow far out, Laganas soft granular sand, Kalamaki coarse light brown sand, Banana fine golden sand, Argassi a narrow strip of sand, and Gerakas sand under clay cliffs. All of it is ground a detector works well on. What varies is how far a ring sinks in soft dry sand once it is walked over.
Water temperature and sun cream
Early season water is cool enough to shrink fingers, and in high summer it is sun cream on wet hands that lets a ring slide off in the shallows. Note the last time you saw it and the first time you noticed it was gone.

I lost my wedding ring on Tsilivi beach. What should I do first?
Fix the spot. Line yourself up with two things that will still be there tomorrow, such as the watersports hut and the end of a sunbed row, and photograph both directions. Tsilivi is sand with a few scattered pebbles and shallow water, so a ring dropped at the sunbeds is usually still within a metre or two of where it fell. I lost a ring on Laganas beach, inside the marine park. How does a search work there?
Much as it does anywhere else. Laganas lies inside the National Marine Park of Zakynthos, set up in December 1999 to protect the loggerhead turtle nesting beaches of Laganas Bay, and the east end of Laganas is one of them. Tell us which beach bar or hotel you were in front of and whether you were on the sand or in the water.
My Oura ring or watch came off in the sea at Kalamaki. Can it be found?
Both contain metal and show on a detector, so it comes down to where you were standing. Kalamaki is coarse light brown sand with a shallow seabed and almost no tide, so something lost in knee deep water tends to stay near where it went in. Tell us the exact spot and the time of the loss.
I lost an earring or bracelet on Banana beach in Vasilikos. Is it worth a search?
A bracelet or a gold earring in dry sand is a fair case if you can put it within a few metres. Banana is fine golden sand, one of the longest beaches on the island, with a seabed that deepens gradually and sunbeds in rows in front of the beach bars. On a beach this long the spot is the problem, not the sand, so tell us which bar and which row you were on. A small stud gives a weak signal and needs a tight area, so send a photo of the matching earring or the clasp.
I dropped my phone or sunglasses off a boat at Zakynthos Town or at Argassi. Can anything be done?
A phone has enough metal to show on a detector, but one that went over the side at the port in Zakynthos Town, or off a boat trip leaving from there, is a job for a diver, not a detectorist. At Argassi the beach is a narrow strip of sand with shallow water, and a phone or metal framed sunglasses lost at the sunbeds or in the shallows is a realistic search. Plastic sunglasses do not show on a detector anywhere and are found by eye or not at all.
I lost my ring at Alykes or Alykanas. Are these easier beaches to search?
Yes, as beaches go. Alykes and Alykanas sit next to each other on the north east coast, both are soft sand with a seabed that stays shallow a long way out. The beaches are crowded in summer and the sand is walked over all day, so mark the spot and message us the same day.
What if the ring cannot be found?
Some are not found. If the spot is vague or the ring went into deep water off a boat, we tell you before anyone travels. We explain the costs before any search is booked.
