The dock section, the path, the patch of lawn
At a cabin the facts that help are small ones: which section of the dock, or how far along the path from the door to the fire ring. Write them down the same day and photograph the place with the cabin or the dock in the frame. In a yard, mark off the patch you were working in.
With lost jewelry that has been in the family for decades you may not have a close-up. A wedding picture where the ring shows on a hand is enough to show the detectorist what they are looking for.

The Twin Cities and their lakes
Minneapolis has over 22 lakes inside the city by its visitor bureau's count, and Saint Paul adds Phalen, Como and the Mississippi riverfront. To the west, Lake Minnetonka covers 14,100 acres (about 5,700 hectares) on Three Rivers Park District's figure. In Chisago City, Ojiketa Regional Park hires out its halls for weddings. Park Point and the Duluth lakefront
Cross the Aerial Lift Bridge from Canal Park and you are on Park Point, a long sand beach on Lake Superior. Visit Duluth sets its gentle sand against the rocky coastline of the North Shore, and notes that the city's official beach season is brief. Tell us where you came onto the sand and what was behind you.
Grand Marais and the rocky North Shore
The East Bay is right in downtown Grand Marais, reached from the Coast Guard parking lot and recommended by Visit Cook County for the hot late summer months. The same guide sends swimmers to the Onion River swimming hole, from a wayside off Highway 61 between Lutsen and Tofte, and to Mink Lake, shallow and warm, about 14 miles (23 km) from Grand Marais. Gull Lake, the Whitefish Chain and the other Brainerd Lakes
More than 465 lakes surround Brainerd, Baxter, Nisswa, Crosslake, Pequot Lakes and Breezy Point on Explore Minnesota's count, with Gull Lake, Pelican Lake and the Whitefish Chain among the ones it names. Sandy public beaches on the Explore Brainerd Lakes list include Whipple Beach in Baxter, Lum Park in Brainerd and the Cross Lake Recreation Area in Crosslake. Lake Mille Lacs from the Isle side
Father Hennepin State Park is on the southeast shore of Mille Lacs, at Isle. Explore Minnesota lists a large sandy beach for swimming, two boat accesses and fishing piers within its 320 acres (about 130 hectares). For a loss out on the winter ice, start with the name of the resort you went out from.
Rochester's two beaches and its back yards
The city of Rochester has two public beaches, Cascade Lake Beach and Foster Arend Beach. Away from the water, a loss here may be on a lawn, in a garden bed or along a shovelled driveway. A yard is a small, fixed area, which counts in its favour. Tell us where the leaves, soil or snow ended up.
Ely, the Boundary Waters and Voyageurs
Semer's Beach in Ely is on Shagawa Lake. The Ely tourism bureau calls it a favorite swimming area, with docks, sand volleyball courts and several islands reached by a wooden foot bridge. For a cabin on another lake near Ely, send the lake's name and a photo of the dock. Ely is also the western gateway to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, 1.1 million acres (about 445,000 hectares) with over 1,000 lakes and more than 2,000 campsites. For a ring lost on a canoe trip, give us the entry point, the lake and the campsite or portage. Farther west, Voyageurs National Park spans 218,000 acres (about 88,000 hectares) of lakes and forest, reached by boat from towns such as Crane Lake.

What Lake Superior and a Minnesota winter mean for a search
Superior at Park Point and along Highway 61
Superior is the coldest of the Great Lakes on the National Park Service's account, with an average temperature of 40 F (about 4 C). Visit Duluth warns that conditions can change rapidly, so stay out when it is rough and measure your spot from something on land.
First snow in Duluth and in the Twin Cities
About 86 inches (about 220 cm) of snow fall in a typical year at Duluth, according to the National Weather Service, and the first measurable snow comes on average in late October. Around the Twin Cities the first freeze comes on average in early October and the first measurable snow about a month later, on the Weather Service's figures there. For a ring dropped in the yard in autumn, tell us the date and what the weather has done to the ground since.
Fish houses and bare hands
Ice fishing on Mille Lacs usually runs from around early December, Mille Lacs Area Tourism says. The Brainerd Jaycees hold their ice fishing contest on Gull Lake, with thousands of anglers on the ice by Explore Minnesota's account. Gloves come off to bait a hook, and a loose ring can come off with them. Out there, drop a pin and take a photo before you move the house or the sled.
When the missing piece was your mother's or your grandmother's
My grandmother's wedding ring slipped off while we took the dock out at our cabin near Nisswa. The lake will freeze before we are back. Is that it?
No, a winter in between does not end it. What matters is the spot, and you can fix that today. Which dock section were you lifting, and how deep were you standing? Draw it on a photo of your shoreline and send it.
One of my mother's diamond earrings came out between the sauna and the lake at our place near Ely. Be honest with me.
Honestly, one small earring on a wooded path is a long shot, and you would hear that from us first. A short path between two fixed points still beats open ground. Send a photo of the other earring and mark the path on a map.
My husband's class ring was his late father's. It came off while he raked leaves in our yard in Rochester. Is a metal detector rental a sensible idea?
It can be. Renting one yourself can suit a fresh loss on dry sand or a lawn. A detectorist makes more sense for wet sand, water, a large area or a small item. Either way, keep the leaf bags.
After a fish house weekend on Mille Lacs, out of Isle, my grandfather's watch is missing. Ice, truck or resort, which first?
The truck, your bags and the resort's lost property, because those are quick to check. For the ice, ask the resort which house you had and where it stood that weekend. Send us that with the dates.
The clasp on my mother's pendant necklace gave way while I was swimming at Park Point in Duluth. How do you mark a spot on a beach that long?
With things that stay put. Stand where you walked into the water and photograph straight inland, so that a path or a building is in the frame. Note how far up your body the water came.
Our mom's ring went in off the end of our dock on Pelican Lake. Nobody in the family knows the first thing about metal detecting in Minnesota. Where do we start?
Start with the dock, not with the detector. Photograph it from shore, mark the board she stood on, and tell us how deep the water is there. We take it from there.
My Apple Watch came off while tubing on Gull Lake, and my friend dropped a pin on her phone within a minute. Is a pin in open water any good?
It is far better than no pin. Open water is still a long shot. Send the pin, and the depth if the boat's screen showed it.
