Richard was on holiday with his family in Vlorë, on the coast of Albania, when his platinum wedding ring came off in the sea. It was a Saturday afternoon in the middle of August, at a sandy beach, and about half an hour after it happened he sent us a message.

A ring that falls off in the sea does not stay where it landed for long. Every wave moves the sand around it, and within hours it can be covered over completely. Looking for it with your eyes, or by feeling around with your feet, almost never works.

What Richard did have was the most useful thing of all: he knew the exact area where he had been in the water. We set up a search with our detectorist in Albania, who arranged to drive over to Vlorë and meet Richard near the beach on the Thursday morning.

Five days had passed by then. Richard showed him the spot, and our detectorist worked the area with his metal detector. He found the ring, and Richard had his platinum wedding ring back on his finger.

Afterwards Richard wrote to thank him. He said the help had been incredible, that our detectorist had gone above and beyond, and that the ring was something “so precious and sentimental” to him. His wife and his father had been there too.

If you lose a ring in the sea, make a note of exactly where you were: a landmark on the beach, a buoy, how far out and how deep. Even after a few days, a metal detector in the right place can still find it. Get in touch as soon as you can.
